I'm someone who has spent a ton of money chasing down every
last part for every little bit of HP in my v6 Dakota over the past 5
years and let me tell you something that may save you
heartache, time and more importantly money trying to make a
big, heavy, underpowered v6 go faster.

Don't buy all these goofy little items that give you 5 horses here
and 10 horses there. It's a waste. It really is. The best things to
do for your truck is a free flowing exhaust system, hi flow
catalytic converter, taller gears (I went to 3.9s with no hit in
MPG), F&B throttle body (if available for your year I have a 99, it
was the #1 best mod that could be felt immediately. If someone
tells you your truck has to learn the throttle body smack them in
the head for me), supercharger or nitrous.

Pulleys, electric fan is a joke, the jet chip is a total waste of cash.
I think an MSD system (now that I have one with the really good
wires and correct plugs) just aren't worth the outlay in cash.
Sure they all help a little in the performance department, I don't
debate that or doubt that. But you are never going to get v8
performance out of your v6 period unless you go drastic. I even
have the JBA headers which are ok. But very expensive for what
you get out of them. If I had to do it all over again I would have
killed the guy in the finance department at my dealer and gotten
a v8 truck for $2,000 more. Some people swear by the
Superchips unit and I have one but with gasoline being $2.60 a
gallon here in the Bay Area I only run the economy program.
Hope that helps you. End of rant.

I will second your rant. I am in the middle of doing all the little mods on my 98, but since I am doing them myself and much of it I am fabbing myself where possible or using freebies. The thing that you said about taller gears: 100% accurate. It will give big torque to the back tires (regardless of engine size) and you dont need a fine measuring device to detect - you will feel it in your neck when it snaps back! 3.92 gears is on my plate for the next expensive mod, as I am going to couple that with a Sure Grip LSD.
With a high flow muffler and cold air intake, thats really all you need for weekend fun

Here is something that you may or may not wish to look at, but it's all the mods I've done and even though I did just about do all of the mechanical work, it still adds up to about a little over 6 grand by the time you figure in shipping... If it weren't for shipping cost, I could have gone all out on the build like I would have really liked to have done...

Mods are as follows...

from v8performance.com ---
gibson chrome headers "wish I had port matched to my heads or atleast angled in for a little bit better flow"
gibson dual cat-back system
carsound cat

from aspracing.com ---
underdrive crank pulley "would have probably been better off to go with entire kit"

from krcperformance ---
msd 6a system "wish I had gotten somewhere else to save a little cash"
blaster coil

from hughesengines.com ---
offset cam keys to degree camshaft
her0814al-v6 cam
double roller timing chain
chain tensioner
stage 1 intake with bores opened to 52mm's "wish I had done a little more extensive porting and shaved the runners another inch"
all the gasket junk
arp head bolts

from socaldakota.com ---
crower pushrods 7.05 "I think" for correct ride path across valve stem due to the regrind cam
crower 1.6 rr's "wish I had gotten the 1.7's considering they are the same price and would have really helped open up the air flow more while not loosing lowend if I had gone with a bigger cam"
guideplates

from fiveomotorsports ---
stage 3 injectors 19lb "with all the head work and the huge tb, wish I had gone with 21 lb injectors, you can really tell that it starves for fuel when floored out, because will pull better at 1/3 throttle compared to full throttle in high gear pulling the steep hill sides, other than that though normal driving isn't really affected as far as acceleration goes"

from holley ---
52mm r/t tb "I removed torque step and did a little more porting"

from mopartsracing.com ---
lifters and all of the valve stuff "wish I had gone with crower lifters due to the fact that I now know that the so called performance lifters are junk with any kind of performance camshaft and due to this I have to run a 1.5 turns valve lash for the power and torque"

work I did myself ---
extreme port and polish on the heads "big improvement"
extra angle put on each valve
head shave of .020"
ap3923 plugs degreed and gapped to .055", should really be opened up another .003" when I have the time "kinda burning dark brown right now"
set tps to .9 volts
advanced ignition to around 4 to 6 degrees "advanced sensor as much as possible, all the way to the wires of the sensor being butted up to the bellhousing edge, same as notching bellhousing"
advanced fuel sync +3 degrees
all new sensors from dodge
180 degree tstat "super stant"
amsoil dual bypass system with 0-30 series 2000
cold air intake with K&N exstreme filter 8" long with filter on the end as well, rubber flap removed for air flow
tornado insert
iat relocated to intake "old sensor was used so as to have the new one in the intake any time wished to hook back up, helped with power needed on demand i.e. passing gear"

All of this has given me a very nice amount of extra hp, but could have been better

Wish I had stroked out the motor, run je hemispherical pistons with gapless piston rings... Then put on either twin turbo setup or a supercharger running on about 10 - 12lbs of boost...

Right now I average about 23-25 mpg and at best checked out to 27mpg...

Next two things to be done though will be superchips tuner and electric fan to really take advantage of what all has allready been done...

Sorry for the long post, but I figure it might help some in their builds...

Long but good...

So... I have a 2000 V6. I get 15 MPG on cheap fuel and about 17 MPG on midgrade. What is this 23-25 MPG? The list of mods was kinda hard to understand... bullets would have been better.

How many horses are you getting to the ground? Just started today looking into pulling all of the horses out of my V6. I hear 14's are possable.

Should I just toss the V6 and get the V8. If I did decide to swap I would be parting it out on ebay. Engine has 20,000 miles and just paid Dodge $2,000 for it. How much would it cost to swap? Hmmm.

HANG UP THE CELL PHONE and BUCKLE UP, A$$H0LE!

Good RX there dakster!! All the motor mods are great. But I was wondering have many of you out there also upgraded the tranny? I am running the automatic, I know I know it robs power, I am looking at a shift kit instal. Any suggestions on which is best for everyday driving and occasional light towing?

I'm not fortunate enough to have a dyno around that actually does dyno's for the general public... You have to be a race car driver to use any of the dyno's around here... I imagine that it would be in the low to mid 200 rwhp range though...

I also have a 5 speed with 3:21 rear gears and have to use premium fuel all of the time which is partially all the reason as to why I get the 23 - 25 mpg...

Larry is the one who you really need to talk to on all of this, because he's getting a little over 300 hp out of his V6 and it's still "as far as I know as of this point" naturally aspirated... He also averages 23 mpg...
