I have a 97 Dak 4x4 3.9. I'm just starting to research and install various mods and hav'nt even scratched the surface on that yet. Only thing I've done so far was a Flowmaster Catback system and I have a K&N cold air intake on they way.

Currently the truck runs great, no hesitations, smooth idle, smooth running ect... With that in mind, I think an ignition system upgrade will be saved for the very last, if I even do it.

What I would like to know, what would be some good recommended tune-up parts for my current stock ignition system? Plugs, wires, cap, rotor? Do I stay with what I have or should I put in some beefier parts? Will the higher performance parts cause my ignition system to work harder and maybe start causing problems?

As far as plugs, I use Champion, many here use to Autolite but I have had no problems with the factory recommended Champs. The Autolites ran fine in the Ford truck I used to have so I wouldn't knock them. I bought the NAPA brass cap and rotor, you can do a search to find out the exact part number on the webpage, mine is a '91 so its not a 'Magnum' engine. I have a stock ignition system and the truck runs great w/ 132,000 miles on it. As far as plug wires, I haven't changed those yet (just got the truck last year and it came with a new set) so no input there.

After reading some previous posts, I'd say it's a no-brainer to go with the Napa cap and rotor. Now I'm just wondering if I should put in a different coil. And of course if I do, that will mean I'll need to experiment with different plugs then factory. Any suggestions? Do I keep the factory coil and plugs which is running well for me or should I put in a high performance coil? My overall plan is to keep adding mods that will give me more HP out of my V6.

Napa MO26 and MO28 cap and rotor have solid brass
incerts and will trasfer more voltage to the plugs

If you plan on upgrading the ignition some day get
a good set of wires like the MSD 8.5 super
conductor or Taylor 8mm spiral you will need them.

The MSD 6a box works well on the dodge trucks and
the MSD 8207 40,000 volt e-core coil this setup
can not be beat for reliability and performance.

If you do the upgrade you will need to open the
gap on the plugs between .050 to .060

Sounds like all you have is a cold air set up if
the stock heat range runs well stick with it until
you do more mods than you will need to drop 1 heat
range

Factory champs or Autolite 5224
reg plug factory gap .035 to .040
Plat tip plug
open .005 .040 to .045

Thanks Larry, good information there.

I picked up the recommended cap and rotor over the weekend as well as the Autolite 3923's and put them in. I do plan on adding mods up until I can't add anymore without adding internal engine parts. (not sure what I'm going to do when that time comes) Your response came in just after I got home from the parts store so I didn't get any wires as of yet. Now I know what to get.

I do have one question about them MSD ignition parts. Can I buy and run the MSD 8207 coil without the MSD 6a box? House + wife + 2 kids = broke. Allot of my mods will be purchased little by little as I scrounge up the cash for each one. And if I can run just the coil for a while, will it still produce the same output to where I'll need to open the gap on the plugs a bit more?

Yes you sure can the coil sells for $35.95
at http://store.summitracing.com/ you may also
be able to find one in a local parts store.

You will need 2 pins that fit the exsisting coil
plug, solder 2 wires on the pins and get 2
connectors for the other end the coil has 2
screw connections on it. Radio Shack has pins and
plugs that will work.

I never like to cut the factory wire harness its
a bad idea

With a volt meter red to exsisting coil plug and
black to good ground turn engine over

1 side will read a constant voltage (+ side)
1 side will pulse up and down (- signal side)

Be sure you pull the fuel pump relay before
cranking engine or you will pump gas into the
motor, its located in the power dist box under
the hood.

And yes you need to play with the gap on the plugs
if white to hot open gap just the coil the gap
will be around .045 to .050 the factory coil is
only around 20 to 25,000 volts, get a nice tan
color and your all set, you may have to pull them
a few times but its well wort the time spent

Sweet.....I will do just what you said. I'll go ahead and order the coil online, I'm in no big hurry.

I'm assuming this is all done after I install the new wires you recommended as well?
