Subject: Modded intake manifold!!

Wednesday I received my 50mm v8 throttle body in the mail, and I decided to throw it on. Then as I was searching the forums, I remembered how intensedak and larry had pictures of their modded intake manifolds. I figured since I already had the throttlebody off, and I had a haynes manual, I should take the time to port it. Man what a difference!! It seriously took me about 16 hours of work, and my buddy showed up for 14 hours of work (all night). I'm not mechanically inclined at all, but with his help and the haynes manual; we finally got it off.

I was appalled at how dirty it was, and how big those runners actually were. Then I noticed where the injector boss had so much extra room to be made bigger and rounder. With my grinder, I took down the runners almost as far as intense dak, maybe half a cm higher than his. The injector bosses were all polished and rounded and matched perfectly with a dremel and a little carbite tip. The carbite tip ate through the metal like nothing and had each injector boss done with about 15-30 minutes of work each.

After we had it all pretty, and cleaned it up...then came the time to put it back together. Of course I didn't label any bolts or ziplock them, just let them lie wherever. Finally we got everything put together, (took maybe 2 hours to figure out how everything went back on). I reset the pcm and then took it for a little test drive. HUGGEE Difference. The 40 series flowmaster sounds amazing with it, and you can definitely tell it's pushing MUCH more air. The acceleration through the powerband is quite noticeable, and I would suggest this mod to anybody that has the time/money.

Parts:
$165 for ported 50mm holley v8tb
$110 for throttlecable, plenum gaskets and belllypan (Dealer costs, but I got them in 1hr)
$10 for brake cleaner, rtv sealant and dexcool
$8 for carbite dremel tip

All I have to do now is the crankshaft sensor, which Josh just posted how to do and new sparkplugs which I already bought but was too tired to put on.

40 series flowmaster, jet stage2, Homebrew k&n cold air, 180 tstat, reloacted iat, 50mm tb, ported intake manifold and more to come.

Oh, and it's a 2002 Dakota Sport cc 4x4, 5spd 3.9, silver with tinted windows, homebrew grill (thanks gutterguard), windshield blackout + Silver sparkle "(ramshead) DAKOTA SPORT (ramshead)", with a silver sparkle ramshead on back middle window, taillight covers painted jet black with rams head cutouts and one rusted ball hitch that I back into the wall at work with.

Im in the process of getting ready for this mod, does anyone have a good clear picture of how they cleaned up the injector boss area? i have seen a few pics, but they have been pretty low quality and i cant quite make it out...

Also how do you like the intake runners cut that short with the 5 speed manual? I also have the 5 speed.

thanks

Tyler

Personally I love it...after around the 3500 mark, the truck really takes off. You'll see when the intake manifold is sitting in your garage how sloppy the injector bosses are. you just cut them down and round it out. It's like a little lip that has no reason to be there.

Did it seem like you lost any of your low rpm power? Im just worried about cutting the runners to short. how much did you grind off? I was planning to grind off 1 inch on the runners.

Thanks

Tyler

I didn't experience much low end loss, if any. It's a steady acceleration throughout, and I am happy with the results. I cut the runners down to nearly even with the intake manifold as Intense dak did, but I left just a little bit sticking up, just because people say a 50mm tb will drop low end (which I haven't noticed), but I did do the intake manifold and new tb at the same time.

How bad does it kill mph adding the v8 throttle body?? Does the intake mod hurt the mph?

Mph? My truck runs to I estimate around 135 (on hills), I had my speedlimiter moved by the dealer and goes past 120 and still speeds up.

If you meant mpg, I hear it only helps, so far I've only driven about 10 miles with it done.
