Subject: recaliberation help?

Message:
I have the Dakota R/T rims on my truck. The truck is a 93 Dakota Sport Reg Cab 3.9L V6 Automatic. It has 3.55 gears in the back. Since I have gone from 15inch wheels to 17's. I went to the dealer and they told me that I need to find out what gear I have that senses speed in the trans. I probably need to go a size down so it spins faster. He says it is a easy figure out but they didn't know which one I had, and it is something that I don't want to mess with. I am wondering if anyone can help? Sorry I don't know much about this stuff.

You need to know what size tires originally came with your '93. Go to the dealer's parts dept., tell them the size of the tire and your gear ratio and they should find be able to find out what speedometer pinion gear you have in your transmission. If the parts guy isn't knowledgeable enough to tell you how many teeth the pinion has, the last two digits in the parts number for the gear is the number of teeth. Once you've got this information, post back and someone will tell you what pinion gear you need for your R/T rims and tires. HTH.

jim, just because you changed rim diameter doesn't mean your speedo is off. the overall tire diameter determines this. you can have a 15"wheel/tire taller than a 17"wheel/tire combo
example: 215/75/15 tire diameter= 27.7"
265/50/17 tire diameter= 27.4"
hope this helps

if you know someone with a GPS, have them take a ride with you after they have initalized there GPS and have a good satellite lock with at least 3 to 4 satellites, most GPSs have a speed function on them, I found out my v6 dak was off by 4mph, it read 60 when I was actually doing 64. You can compare the GPS reading to you speedometer at various speeds and determine how far off it is. I will to bet your gonna find that your speed is indicating a slower speed than your actually traveling, this will also throw off, your gas mileage calulations. They will be lower than your actually getting. The dealer should no exactly which gear you need based on rim and tire size and differential ratio. Good Luck and report back what you find out.

Dealer can just make a computer change or
you can buy a unit and do it yourself for around
$150 $200

Ask the police to run 55 in front of you to check
your speedo because you think its off they will
gladly assist you in doing this the spedos in the
police cars are certified to be right on
