Subject: Grill inserts?
IP: Logged

Message:
Ive been messing around with making my own grill inserts using aluninum and stainless from my hardware store, Ive done a couple diffent lower ones, Im having trouble devising a way to keep it attached? How do the street scene speed grills(or others) attach? and then how do you get to the hood release once they are in?

why dont you just buy a stull or trenz grill? I use a screw driver to open my hood (poke between billet strips and push over). I havent got a chance to rig up a "hood opener" yet.

The Street Scene grilles ttach by U shaped clips which have a barb on each side. They hold very well and I haven't had any problems.

The hood opens via a cable and T handle which is attached to the secondary hood release. The T handle hangs down between the grille and the bumper. Pop the hood from inside, reach for the T handle and pull down to open the hood. Works well.

Another concept for opening the hood can be seen here:

Do aftermarket grille inserts like the Speed Grille come with a rig to open the hood? Also, does anyone know where to get a different grille shell...like a round one without the cross bars in it?

I have the speed grilles, but my "t handle" thingy that I pull to open the latch doesn't work too well, so I just use a screwdriver to pop the latch =)

Easier than reaching under the lower valance to grab the handle

Black98Dak,

Your T handle runs under the lower valance?

My Street Scene T handle stops at the top of the bumper. Works slick as sh!t and I haven't had an ounce of trouble with it.

maybe that explains a few things! hehehee

I guess I put it on wrong... take a pic of yours and send me a link so I can see how it SHOULD go.

Guess I started getting pissed after putting in the lower grilles and having my knuckles lacerated in several areas, and just didn't read the instructions too well =)

Anyone have a pic of the clips used to hold in the grill inserts of the street screen grills?

If you do or could take some, I really would like some close ups of them, how they work and with them both attached and un attached. I know its asking alot but I woudl really thank you.

I have created custom grill inserts for my '98
Dakota for a total less than $5.00 (they have
the $100.00 + look and quality). There is an
aluminum mesh gutter cover found at any
home or hardware store - Gutter World
Premium Hinged Gutter Guard. It comes in 3'
sections. The key is to remove your grill and
trace a template of the left side openings and
trace them to a 1/2"-3/4" thick piece of
plywood. I used a spiral saw to cut out the
opening holes in the wood. Be sure to keep
the cut-outs. You'll want to make sure that the
cutouts are somewhat smaller than the holes
in the main board (like a loose puzzle piece).
Place the mesh on the main board, with plenty
of extra around the perimeter. Then place your
cut-out over the mesh and using a hammer,
pound on the cutout down flush with the main
board. You will have a perfectly formed grill
insert complete with a 90 degree bent edge.
Remove the cut-out. Using a heavy duty
siccors or snips, trim the extra off, leaving a
good 3/8" beyond the bent edge. Also when
trimming it out, leave several long "tabs" of
mesh at points that will not interfere with the
vertical plastic on your factory grille. Insert the
correct piece into your grill and using the "tab"
extensions, secure the piece into your grill by
bend-wrapping the tab material into place on
the back side of the grill. To do the right hand
side, simply flip the board and cutouts over
and you'll get the mirror image you need. With
a bit of paitence and skill you will love the
outcome! Clearcoat the aluminum for lasting
shine and durability. Good Luck!
