 Subject: rear bumper problems

so i got in an accident, rear bumper was trash, i bought a new 1 from the same year, put my brackets on it, and tried to put it back on, its as if the brackets got shorter, they wont go from the bumper to the mounting holes because it hits the back of the truck and scratches the paint
i thought maybe i put the brackets on backwards, but i took them off and switched them and same problem, they are interchangable, what the hell could have gone wrong? they werent damaged, came off my truck fine, but now they wont go back, its like if they were 2inches longer, everything would be perfect, any ideas? i hate driving with out a rear bumper
