Unplugging the fuse won't do it. (it will but not safely) You will need to disconnect the battery and wait no less than 2 minutes before you disconnect the air bag. Reason being is the ACM...airbag control module...is equipped with a capacitor that stores voltage. This capacitor allows the airbag to do it's job in case of a battery power failure (the cables get cut).

The reason you wait 2 minutes is so that the capacitor discharges its stored voltage. Then it is safe to remove the airbag. A lot of guys don't wait and nothing happens to them. But I've seen an air bag break arms so I wouldn't want to chance it.

Also, I'm not sure about your hometown. But in PA we have to have our vehicles inspected for safety. A missing airbag would not cut it around here. That would be like removing your seatbelts. Food for thought.

Yes, every car gets a safety inspection and the airbag is one item that must be there. I don't know of any aftermarket wheels with airbags. I would think that would be a huge liability for an aftermarket manufacturer.

yep, once a year...usually around $20 or so for the safety inspection, everywhere's different. Plus, you have to get the emissions test also, which is another 30 some bucks...so all in all, you'll have about 50-60 in tests once a year. Thank god we still only have one license plate to pay for.

If you're lookin for a cheap mod, a custom wheel might not be your first pick..

http://www.cconceptscc.addr.com/braundakota/dakotadash.jpg

click above to see mine.. you're looking at about 450 for the wheel and possibly up to another 200 for a custom made adapter. When I put this wheel on my dakota, they didn't make a hub (adapter) to fit the spline count on the factory steering column. Also, you will need to get a tool to pull the wheel off, It is going to be pressed on there & hard as hell to get off. You can probably rent a steering wheel puller at a local shop or even a place like auto zone. You're airbag light on your dash will be on after that though, Taking out the fuse won't help either... I'm sure there's a way to bypass it, but it didn't bother me that much.

We don't have inspections where I'm from, but in Illinois it is illegal to have an aftermarket steering wheel with no airbag, if your vehicle was originally supposed to be equipt with one (or so i've been warned be the men in blue)

i have found a couple decent ones at autozone that are pretty cheap(grant i think) but i was looking into this because i am running out of things to customize on the interior. i started with the standard grey dash, nasty multi-colored fabric, and the and the black around the steering wheel area. i had the main dash painted black, the steering wheel areas painted red, the a-pillars and kick panels are red, the sill plates(?) are black, the headliner is black, red and black seat covers and i am almost finished with a custom center speaker encloseure to replace my center seat with a 12" sub, also i have the racing guages. so i am starting to run out of the cheap stuff i think.
