Hey, has anyone given this treatment to a bright grille? I thought about using black mesh instead...looked around in viewer's rides a bit, but either it didn't show in the pics, or it wasn't done.
Just curious...

Thanks guys... After pondering and pondering over whether to buy a Grillcraft or Street Scene product, I finally just decided to "do it myself".

Heck.. for the $200 to $300 I saved, I can use that money to do some other upgrade... maybe even get that CD player I have been wanting (Alpine 7875... too bad I can't "build" one of those huh? LOL)

Well, I'm glad everyone likes the article... that really made it worthwhile to write it! Thanks again guys!

Yeah I love the grill. but just be warned, at about a year or so, actually less, the grill gets oxidized, and really looses it's shine. I'm about to do mine again but I cut up my hands so bad doing it the first time. Oh well just thought I'd drop a line and sey hello. I'm new to the board.

Heh... well at $6 replacement cost, I don't think that's gonna be much of a problem... versus the $200 plus for retail.

I wonder what it would cost to "powder coat" it?

BTW, I'm glad I didn't cut my fingers when I did mine... that sounds painful.

Actually, mine isn't "black"... It's "Deep Amythist" (blue/purple) from '99...a discontinued color.

I've been thinkin' about gettin' clear corners put on, however my birthday is next month... and I suggested those as a gift from my GF. (now I gotta keep my fingers crossed :)

Hrm, that's a pretty cool project; I like it. I have wanted to do something of the sort too, but with alumninum and have it anodyzed (maybe do it myself; I need to do my paintgun too anyways).

Now that I have seen that it is workable for low cost and not too many worries of destorying anything, I think I will go for that project.

I just did this today, All together it cost me 6.60, 5 for the gutter guard, and 1.60 for DarkFury's relocated hood release, I got some steel wire for 0.45, the crimp caps for 0.77, and I got some rubber tubing for 0.24, I got the zip ties at work and already had the key ring, this saved me so much money, and it looks great, thanks DarkFury,

Did anyone tried to make the insert a little bit "bold-out-of-the-grill"? Just like street scene's. IMHO, that would look even better than the flat one.

AHH that brings up a intresting point. Why don't u guys spray those rain guards briliant silver before installing them. That way you don't have to replace it in a few years.. Also use some thick leather gloves and you won't cut your hands. ;-)

very well done Dark Furry, I'm going to do the same to mine so I'm glad you posted your instructions. I have a 97 black sport (that I call SHAFT) and if I can get the paint to match in going to paint the wire mesh red to match the decals, what I'm wondering is have you washed it yet, and what would happen in the hood latch wire broke, I know the wire is just your secondary latch but it would be my only hood latch so if it broke would I be screwed?. e- mail me if you have any ideas thanx

JPoe...

As Lesley has already pointed out, there is only one "R" in Fury... but thanks for trying. LOL

Ok... yes, my truck has been washed since it put those on... and nothing adverse has happened.

And if your hood latch were to break, well then you would have to find an alternate means of moving the latch to the right... usually by using a screwdriver poked through your grille like Roby suggested.

Personally, I don't think that my manual latch will ever break... there is a steel cable that runs from the ring and through the latch... and it doesn't require all that much "tension" to open the latch.

Hey...just incase anyone cared... i found this spraypaint/rust protector at Lowes Hardware for $3. It is chrome, and it makes the grill look ten times better. it makes it look even more like a top of the line grill than it already did. Its easy to apply, just tape up the front end of the truck REAL good and put a piece of cardboard behind the grill and spray away. It looks great. im hoping to get a picture of it online ASAP. well... until next time.

Are you sure that this paint will stick permanently to aluminum? You'd better check before you start spraying... cause if you don't prep aluminum right it is just gonna end up peeling right off...

Just a suggestion.
