Got a couple easy questions. Ive gotten white face gauges for my 2000 Dakota. Ive searched but no one said if the needles can come off. I dont wanna break them. Also, the wiring that came with it has to be connecte to a positive and negative wire. Positive is easy to find with a circuit tester, how do i find a negative?
Thanks for the help,
-Mike

Did you just get the gauge paper or new gauges??? The needles do come off, use a "divit remover" for golf... They are used on greens (not sure if you are familiar). That's what mine came with. Put it under the needle and pull upward, using the divit remover as a lever. Hope that helps.

I can't speak for certain here, but the negative "should" be nothing more then a ground.

I have also heard of several people who used a fork to pry the needles off. Just be sure to pry straight up so as not to mess up the needle pins.

Also, when putting them back on, they can be pressed too far in such that they end up binding on the guage face.

Just a little FYI. Not sure if you have done any work yet, but you will want to note how far the needle drops without the stops, to make sure that all the gauges read correctly. The Tach and Speedometer are a pain in the rear. I had to drive mine with my GPS on to get the speed correct (It's more accuract than most vehicles) and then translate that into RPM's. At about 65mph, I turn 2000 RPM's.

Matt is right. Getting the needles attached back in the right orientation can be painful without any advance planning. There are a couple of ways I know to do it, note that they all require a before and after picture.

1) Do a guage sweep test. I can't remember the exact sequence, but one of those "turn the key, hold a button, left toe in right nostril..." things. When I used this, I still needed to fine tune the gas and temp guage.

2) Turn the key on, but don't start it. Most of the guages energize themselves off the stop peg. Note the positions, then attach the needles to the same place.

3) Start it and let it warm up. Note all the guage positions, replace the face, start it up again, warm it up, re-attach the needles.

4) For an RPM/speedo validation. Take it on the highway up to 2000rpms, ensure that it's warmed up and the torque converter is locked, note the speed and rpm. Validate this after your done.

I'd recommend doing 3 and 4. I did 1 and 2 and ended up having to do some fine-tuning. The other note is to keep the panels off until you're sure the needles are set right. It will save the de-assembly/re-assembly time.
