rhino liner all the way...they can even color match it for you.

if you cant afford that (about 400 bucks)...just go with herculiner...its decent stuff, the most important step, though, is the prep....be careful and take your time.

Herculiner sucks! Don't use it. It turns dull black when it was shinny, it becomes very pourus and holds dirt and stuff in those pours. Its really prickly and hurts if you like scrap your knee or sumtin loading stuff. Id get rhino or a liner like that. Expensive but much better than any other bed linner out there.

I have the roll-on type, and have no complaints to date. Roughly 60 bucks or so, one coat, and it holds up very good. I suppose if you wanted to add 3 or 4 coats to get the same thickness as Rhino etc you could, but I would suggest just 2 coats. And as mentioned, PREP is the key to success, and liner, roll-on or sprayed, that peels or chips, hasn't been properly preped before installation.

anyone tried Line-X? I heard it was some good stuff, but not sure. What all goes into prep work? and does herculiner really come out all that rough and rugged? One last question and i'm done...Is it better to go up onto the bed rails or just on the inside or what? Thanks

I have herculiner on my front and rear valance so i dont have too look at the ugly grey plastic, it went on very easly and is holding up great, i have professional lining on the bed and rocker panels, i believe it is line-x came with the truck when i bought it, it is also tough crap, i have tried to make that stuff chip or fake and not a damn chance. the spray in ones probably are the best option, but if money is a concern and you dont do excessively hard loading or unloading i would go with the herculiner, but i still think the profession is the best option, most pros have a life of the truck warranty too

all liners are rough, it is by design. The roughness is so what ever load you are carrying doesn't move.. IF you want smooth paint it, but if you want a functional liner spray it or roll it. I measured my top rails all the way around the bed, taped it , and rolled it. PREP: I bought a sanding disk for my drill, primarily used for paint removal. You are essentially scuffing up if not removing your clear coat, so the liner can adhere properly. This goes for both spray and roll on. These type of liners that chip, or peel, haven't been properly prepped. I spent 2 hours sanding my bed.

ShiftRider,

I was just wondering how you prepped your valance before using the herculiner. I already put a dupli-color roll on liner in my bed and it is holding up great. I just was curius how to prep the plastic since it already has a texture to it. Also what type of roller did you use.

Thanks
JakDak

I know that all bedliners are rough, but i've seen and felt some that are rough enough to cut your hand up and i've seen some that are somewhat smooth as compared to other bedliners

I have a Line-X spray in liner. I had the bed and over the rails done along with the rear wheel wells (keeps the noise of stones to a minimum).

I had it done a few days after I bought the truck and it still looks good two years later.

I do a fair amount of off-road travel and haul tools, prospecting gear, camping gear - etc etc, and it all stays in place (with a little help from bungie cords). Dust and mud clean up is easy, a hose and occasional brushing with soap and water and it looks new again.

I have the roll on Rustoleum liner. I looked into the Line-X, but it was too expensive. If you have the money, that's the way to go (my 97 short bed would have cost over $425).

Anyway, I used Rustoleum liner that I got at Home Depot for aound $80. It took two of us around 6 hours to do the whole job, including prep, paint, and clean up. I've had it for over a year, and use it relatively heavy. The finish hasn't faded or anything, and it's still just as nice as the day I painted it. The other nice thing is that they give you enough liner for an 8' bed. On a 6.5' Dakota, you should have more than enough left over for other things. Personally, I lined the inside of my fender walls with it. It prevents the rust, and they also looks a hell of alot better black than they did before.

i used herculiner to line the underside/interior of my jeep....for the cost it was good...i think line-x and rhinoliner are tits but the others arent that hard...not to mention they do a damn good job prepping and you get a mad warranty with it...mines reallly thick, i seriously could probably hold water in my bed if ididnt have drain holes, thats how good this stuff seals up. i had it back the same day, and its still shiny, but does hold stuff in place for the most part...i picked up a new motor (used LOL) in minnesota for my truck, drove back to chicago, it spilled motor oil all over the place...sprayed it down with tire cleaner and powerwashed it right out...not even a trace of oil. its cool stuff.

I think what I used was Duraliner not Herculiner. All the same tar base I guess. Still works good for me.

I would recomend Rhino or Line-x if you use you bed for "Heavy Duty" use but a roll in will work for light use. or in my cause to cover up some pritty nasty scratchs!
