Subject: Painted Wheels.....
IP: Logged

Message:
What's up guys, I've finally fixed my truck that's been broken down for over a year now, and I really want to fix it back up. I have a RC 98 Dakota sport.

My question is if someone could give me a "how to" or tell me what's the process and materials to "re-paint" my stock wheels?

They're not dented or anything, just scuffed and a few blemishes. I want to paint them a color some what like stock, but brighter/shinier. Or maybe a "gun metal" color. I know it can be done, I just don't know how.

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Best thing to do is to have them sandblasted back to bare alluminum or steel and then have them powdercoated

or you can just samd them really really well then wash them. prep them with M.E.K ( methil ethil keytone) and then get good primer and whichever color you wish to paint them in. Purchase quality primer and paint.

MEK is not the best to use in prep work for painting, maybe to remove the grime before hand. Just make sure before you prime/paint that the rim has a waterbreak free surface after wet sanding. I say wet sanding because using water while sanding removes contaminates that could be ground into your work.

Have fun,

Actualy MEK is fine to use. its also considered a primer agent. I dont know if I would wet sand it. i guess it would depend on the condition of your rims. degreaser and a brush works wonders to get grime off in the begining. it depends on how good of a paint job you want on your rims. Prep work is the longest most tedious job but if done right the rims would look great. another thng to be patient is the spraying itself. if you try to get too thick a coat on there you may get runs.
Michael may be right about MEK but Ive used it to wipe down things I needed to spray.
if you have access to a spray gun and a compressor go that way. a spray gun shoots paint out at a higher velocity than a paint can.
Good luck with your wheels

If you want your wheels redone-- Powdercoating is the best way to go.

I am having some RT rims redone shortly when I run some other bracketry through.

I'm looking for a set of the spare-style Steel wheels for my Dak - it's slowly turning into a '70 Cuda. Unfortunately, it seems no-one makes a Rallye-style wheel that fits our 6x4.5" Dakota's bolt pattern. BUT, the 10-hole 16" steel wheels that Mopar uses for a spare on the newer Daks look almost exactly like the old Rallye rims that Ma Mopar used on all her Muscle cars from way back. All I need is a chrome trim ring (easy to find) and some Argent paint, and I'll have a set of Rallye-clones for my truck, with no worries or problems about sizing, etc, like I would with aftermarket wheels. If anyone is willing to sell their old one, or ones - email me
