I am considering painting my door/tailgate handles. Does this look good over the texture
or do they need smoothed? If so some suggestions.
Also how durable is it. I dont want them to start
chipping and look like crap.

I will be doing my handles as soon as it warms up a bit and was under the impression that they should definitely be sanded smooth for proper adhesion and longevity of finish.

I’m going to paint my door handles next week when I start to re-paint my truck. If you are trying to get rid of the textured look you can try to sand them down but that’s risky b/c you need to make sure you do it evenly. The other, way to do it, is to paint them once and have them put a thick layer of paint and clear. They will still have a textured look on them, but then re-sand them, just like you would to color sand a car before you detail it and then repaint it and add more clear. Then you will get a nice smooth finish. I know this seems like a lot of work and money on paint but I’m fortunate that my dad’s a car painter so I can afford to do it this way. That’s what I did with my front lower bumper valance. We’re also going to re-do the flames on my truck b/c I want the flames to come out farther on the doors. I’ll put some pics up. Need to get my camera to work first. Anyhow that’s just how I get rid of the textured look on stuff. Other guys might have other ways of doing it.

Oh yeah about getting the paint to stick on the plastic DuPont has some stuff called adhesion promoter for use on plastics (I use DuPont on my truck) It works great. You spray it on the prepped piece you want to paint before you lay the actual paint. I’ve had my lower bumper valance painted now for over 2 years and no chips. In those years I’ve gone through 2 windshields because of all the driving I do pitted the window so that should give you some confidence that the stuff works b/c I have no chips or anything on it.

i couldnt get my door handles/tailgate handle painted. i bought new steel handles and got them painted. i wouldnt have the plastic ones painted because the paint will fall off or fade off because of the plastic material and because the handles get touched so much. also, the color of the plastic ones will stick out more because they will look a little lighter colored than your truck. i'd go with the steel handles. they were 60$ for all 3, do it the right way. :)

Matt, I'll try not to get to excited!!!....Are the handles "chrome" or steel or pot metal...the reason I'm asking is because my Dak is black and "chrome" and I've spent three years chasing "chrome"....mirrors, bug shield, complete front bumper, fuel door, rear bumper, rims, tail lights, clear corners and of course the inside goodies....do you have part numbers and where you got them from...I did find a company in BC Canada (eh) that will chrome plastic....sun visors and whatever else but they aren't to sure about how it would stand up to the "great outdoors"...the "chroming" they do is interior stuff and the last I talked to them they were working on exterior chroming of abs, plastic etc....the cost I don't know, but the Canada thing is also a problem...drop ship to Washington state then truck to BC...been looking for someone in the US that does "vaccuum plating"...that's the tech name for the process...PLEASE GET BACK TO ME???? hey,
i'm not sure what color they were before i got them painted. they were probably white, but yes u can have them chromed. i know ucan cuz its steel, if they can be painted blue, they can be chromed. i will have to call them to get the actual part #. but if u live in canada, u need a find a large Dodge car dealer. i went to mine in my town and they ordered the part for me and painted it for me. if ya need more help email me at fatmat789@yahoo.com

I painted my plastic mirrors and door handles over a year ago,the truck is a 2000, I had no trouble matching the the paint color, I spent a few hours sanding them, then I used an adhesion promoter, high fill primer (for the tight areas I had trouble sanding)three coats of paint and four coats of clear. They look really good and show no signs of wear. Be sure if you do it to build up the front portions of the mirrors as they take the majority of abuse from debris and bugs.

yeh what idrops said, and definately you make sure you use aa flex additive on the mirrors and don't apply too thick of paint, it cracks easier. With the texture, primer and sanding is a must some time multiple times. After final sanding is done go back over your pieces of soap and a fine scowering pad to clean the dust, dirt, and oil from your sweaty hands, wipe down with a dirt and grease remover then tack with a tak cloth before applying your base coat. Go light on the coats at first, let flash for 5 to 7 minutes, hit it again, flash, hit again if needed, air drying wait 1 day in decent temp (not cold) and then clear,flash...etc (for all you metal flakes) Solids go single stage.
Mine are metal, but my interior trim is plastic and it's Viper GTS Pearl Blue. Dash bezel,A-Pillars, scuffs, rear side wall panels and look awesome.
Good Luck

I also heard that the steel ones are hard to find. If u couldnt find them, u could always just have the plastic ones painted as well.

*i know this is an old post, but im bringing it back to life.

anyone else found these steel handles? do they actually exist??

im just curious because i cannot find them anywhere, and i have no access to paint sprayer, and everywhere i go tells me that "the paint might chip and we wont be responsible, but yeah, we'll paint them for $150" i doubt that anywhere i go would be willing to put enough coats/effort to make them last. I dont want to waste $150 either.

if any info is available, please let me know.

erik, i ended up sanding mine down and doing it myself. They turned out perfect. Secret is to sand them smooth and go over them with 600grit, then clean them off good, spray them with a few good coats of primer and get some color match paint. Im extremely pleased with the results.

I spoke with "Matt" about the steel handles, I tried to get them from the same dealership, but Matt told me that when he originally posted the message he thought they were metal, but when he got them they were just dealer painted plastic. bummer i kno. i'm buying a power tailgate lock so when i remove my stock one, i'm gona test on that one.

thanks for the quick feedback guys, time to start sanding.

also, one more question, anyone know how much a set of the plastic handles run from dealer? id probly rather not have to do all of the sanding at once, as im not sure when id have the time.
