 Subject: Snapped Cable Opening Hood???

So I replaced my oil the other day...no problems what-so-ever...except the next morning, I went out the check the oil level and the hood won't open.
The hood release has absolutly no tension in it, so I assume the cable snapped somehow. I took off the hood release lever under the steering wheel and it the cable looks fine on that end, so it must be the other end.
Any suggestions on how to get the hood open...or anything to check (maybe it's not the cable)???

It's not a dakota but my bosses chevy cavalier had the same problem. I managed to take off his plastic front grill. Then with the right combination of tools I was able to pop the lever mechanism from the open space I created. Good luck

howdy yall ... the only problem that i see here is that you cant get to the lever to open it from the grill. Its inclosed in the core suport, I found this out when i had this problem. The bad thing is... I broke the grill out tring to get to the release and found out you cant get to it that way, I was kinda mad about that,the way i got it open was by layin under the truck with a coat hanger,a mirror and a friend with a flashlight and long skinny arms and fished around till i got a hold of the latch and pulled quick and hard, soon after we cracked open a beer and gave a big cheer's

hello the lever for pulling the hood is broken hence i cant get my hood open. i can see the cable
but the grip is not enough to pull it. any suggestions on how i can open the hood?

this happened to me i got a really long 10" skinny flat head screwdriver. went to the front of the engine and you can barely get it in the latch but you can pry the lever through the grille it takes a little pacience and some finness but you can do it.

I checked all of the notices I could find on how to open my hood after the cable broke. I could not get any to work, for one thing on my 95 u can not even see the cable from any place under the hood, nor can u get to it in any way. However, I could see what I thought to be the latch But there was a pin to the end i could see thus I was sure it had to pivot on that pin. Therefore i took a bastard file bent a hook in the end of it and used that to move the latch and click.
