Subject: Rear power-window?
IP: Logged

Message:
I had this idea for the rear window...

I know it would probably cost a lot, but wouldn't it be awesome if you could make it a power window? Like up/down... Kinda like the back window on a Honda Civic Del Sol; I think that's the one with the rear power window.

Back in the '80s, when I had my nice little '84 Mitsubishi pickup, I remember seeing an electrically-opening rear window kit. It took about 4" depth and the window went up/down. I don't remember the mfr; it was expensive (>$300). It looked cool, but I never met anyone who had one.

I met a guy a few weeks ago who did exactly that to his Ram, so it can be done. He made his rear sliding window into a power window, and put embedded the switch into the roof of his interior, right above the rear view mirror.

That guy told me of a Dak owner who made it so the entire rear window slid up and down like you described. He had a topper on the back with a badass system under it. Made the window motorized so he could jam to his beats.

It isn't a power window, but the breezer glass is available for Dakotas. You can remove your back glass at any time with this system, it's easy to do.

I have a link to their site on my website, too tired and lazy after work to go look it up. It's on the aftermarket accessories page in the miscellaneous section.

There is a power sliding window called the PowrSlidr (I believe that is how it is spelled), but that is only the sliding center part (makes a cool "woosh" sound when it opens/closes). As far as the entire rear window, you might consider those Ford 4 door explorer type pickup (sorry, forget the name) back window...they are a much larger (yet not full size) power window...

Tom, you had the same idea as I did. I wonder if it woudl be possible to adapt the Sport Trac rear power window into the Dakota. It's only the center 1/3 of the window that is powered, but I've seen the Sport Tracs with it and it looks cool if it will work.

CRLaurence made them back in the early 90s, but quit making them because there wasn't enough demand. (I read that on another site)

I to am looking for a way to do this.

Having the single back glass on my dak, this idea would be awesome. I would think that a kit may be hard to produce, because I would think there would have to be welding involved, to add a sliding track for the window. Or perhaps cutting slots in the existing window frame for a track. I haven't looked back there, YET, but now that I have the itch to have one, I will have to check it out. The motor part should be easy, although if you don't have a xcab you may lose some leg room, imo. I may go to the bone yard to look at some old full size Blazers/Broncos, to get a better idea for install tips If I figure somethin out, I will post w/install pics.

I have thought about this for years... here are some of the obsticles as I see them:

1: when you cut the opening for the window to drop through you will weaken the cab. You will have to properly strengthing the cut edges and the cab panels in a manner to manage the loadings.

2: you will have to create a channel in the sides of the opening for the weatherstripping and window to fit into. (this is probably the reason the sporttrak has only the middle 1/3 operational).

3: you will have to seal and drain the cab rear wall so water doesnt end up in the cab.

all of this adds up to major body work requiring painting. NOT a bolt in :(

I really like the SportTracks windows too, I think it's pretty damn cool looking. Hell yeah that would be a load of work. I couldn't imagine how much stuff you would have to do. You also need someone who would be qualified enough to do it.

I agree that it is definatly not a bolt on, and I also agree with kcmm, with regards that you would have to reinforce the cab due to weakness. Thinking about this for a few daze, I figure you would have to fabricate and weld your own window channel, which would entail alot of measuring twice, cutting, welding once. IMO, I think with cab reinforcments you could potentially lose approx., just a guess, 2" of cab space. Crappy part is I sold my welder a few years back, but I am willing to take my dak to a fab shop and see what they can do. Good luck to all who take this idea the next step.
