I've just put in a bid on a '79 F150. If I don't get outbid I'll be starting my truck project this month.

All I need is another big pile of $$$$

Here's the plan:
Swap in a 5.9/NV4500/NP203+NP205/Dana44F and 9inch Rear. Add lift to make room for 35's.

I've got a '95 (Gen 2). I'm going for the full coil spring front & leaf rear.
I've heard of other Gen 1's doing a successful swap so you should be able to learn what you need to know if you look around.

Doug, that sounds like an awesome idea. If I put a solid axle in my truck I'd go with an early bronco donor. I was definitely thinking about it but I don't the time or money right now. Probably in a couple years. Why the 203 and 205? Just go with a 205 and 4.56 gears or something. The coils in front would be great and a relatively easy swap. Good thinking with the manual. A granny low, 205 and 4.56 gears would give you a great crawl ratio. The only way to truly wheel a dakota is with a solid axle conversion

Andy,
I thought about the EB donor but I wanted to have wider axles. I'm going with the double t-case for a couple of reasons. First, I already own them so why not? Second, I like the flexibility - I can have 2:1 or 4:1 low range, and I can also have 2:1 in 2wd which can be fun in the right situation.
The only part I'm still debating is whether I should stroke the 5.9 into a 408.

Yup, got the whole truck. So far the project looks very good, but I lost my work space so I'm on hold until I find another. That's OK I guess, I still need to collect a few more parts.
I'm going to start a web page about the project as soon as I pick one of the dynamic DNS servers to point to my domain. Try www.palmeronline.net and see if I'm up yet.
