I can't believe you finally sold that thing! What you gonna do now?

I'm in the same boat too, my 2002 Dakota 4X4 is on it's way out in december to be replaced by a Ford Ranger Edge with the 4" Superlift and 33X12.50 BF muds on 15X10 589 rims.

If you are seriously thinking about something else, i can give you the low down on any truck, i've made myself a true pro in the field in the last few months trying to figure out my truck.

Reasons for trading to '01 Ranger:
4.0L V6 has better power/weight ratio then V8 dakota.
4.10 gearing.
8.8" axle available with better locker and gear options.
Better multiplication than dakota.
600 pounds lighter.
Available lift.

And i pretty much know all the pluses to other trucks too if interested, but would like to at least hear your plan for now.

I would really like to see how you came up with the figures that the Ranger has a better power to weight ratio? It only weighs 600 pounds less with hardly any torque or horsepower! If the power to weight ratio were better it would outrun my quad and trust me it won't. It's small as crap, might as well be a regular cab because theres no room in the rear for anything. just curious how you came upon your findings since you claim to know all the stats.

EWWWWWWW, RANGER???

Awwwwwww come on man, you can do better than a Fix Or Repair Daily Ranger! That's what I got rid of when I got my 2000 Quad 4x4. I had a 98 Ranger with the offroad package and loaded, but it was a major POS!!!! I bought it with 20 miles on it and it turned out to be nothing but a big TURD! And for some reason Ford Dealers have crappy service depts. Plus my dakota gets WAY better gas mileage than the ranger could have ever hoped for. The 4x4 worked crummy, the engine knocked even when using recommened gas and it was pretty weak on power. There are alot better choices out there with available lifts so I'd rethink the Ranger thing, Sure the prices are probably alot cheaper than other trucks, but alot of times you get what you pay for, And I found that out the HARD WAY! No more fords for me! 3 dealers couldn't fix the problems with it either so that's why I finally got rid of it. And fords quality is not the best it's ever been right now either, you hear all the time about qualiy problems and lets not forget the whole firestone fiasco! Plus alot of 4.0L engines are having problems with the timing chain stretching with just a few miles on them and causing a MESS. Just something to think about! I'd rather push a Dodge than drive a ford! Oh and another thing, At one of the dealers I took my Ranger to, The service guy ADMITTED to me that they had alot of troubles with Rangers and Explorers. I know that everybody has to make up their own mind but that's just my experience with a Ford, hope if you get one yours is better than mine was. BTW both trucks are autos and have 3.55 so theyre kinda close as far as gas mileage comparisons. Plus the fact that mine was an extended cab and had no room whatsoever.

As far as some power/weight ratio, here you go:

Ford Ranger-
207HP with 238ft/lbs torque
3550 curb weight
4.10 gear ratio

Dodge Dakota-
235HP with 295ft/lbs torque
4200 curb weight
3.92 gear ratio

Curb Weight to HP ratio is in favor of Ranger.
Curb weight to Torque is in favor of Dakota.

The Ranger produces a better power to weight ratio when it comes to HP then the Dakota by .70.

The Dakota produces a better power to weight ratio when it comes to torque then the Ranger by .70.

So i just figured since one had a little more HP and the other had the same ratio number extra torque, they were about equal.

Then you bring into account that the ranger comes with a 4.10 gear compared to the dakota 3.92 gearing. Plus the Ranger has a better multiplication ratio then Hummer H2 and definitly a better ratio then the dakota. Plus even if they have the same power, the lighter truck will be nibbler going over things and will handle off and on road situations better.

On top of that, there is a respectable 4" lift available for the truck by Superlift, along with all kinds of locker choices.

And as far as sources go, i used Motor Trend's Truck Trend magazine, Motor Trend's Truck Buyer Guide, and Kelley Blue Book Specs Guide for the numbers.

Don't get me wrong guys, i love dakotas. I was just unfortunate enough to buy a truck with no power options, no bench(which i want), no fog lights or any sound options or anything, and the 3.9L with the 4sp auto. The only options i got where the CD player, the captain chairs, and the 3.92 with LSD. Plus i really want a suspension lift and 33" mud tires, and i just can't bring myself to buy a truckin lift or get a body lift. This just works out best for me and i was just going to try and help knobby make a choice if he needed some help. I didn't want to sell him a ranger, i was just explaining why i like them.

Ok, heres my problem with Fords claim of the Rangers hp figures. If the Ranger did indeed have a better power to weight ratio or was even close to being equal, then why doesn't it show in performance? It should run with or maybe even be a tad faster than the Dakota but that is not even close to being true. I know what the mags say, what I am saying is real world testing proves otherwise. In fact I know some v6 Daks that would be more than happy to take on the Edge.

I have a friend that has a 2000 Ford Ranger and there is no way it produces more power to weight ratio over even close to the 3.9's, never mind the V-8's. Other than the great statistics you've produced, maybe you should have looked at the resale value of The Ranger, S-10 and the Dakota's. You might find out that the Dakota does better. That's one reason I bought a Dak. And also, yeah the Ford Ranger is about 600 Ibs lighter than a V-8 Dak. But the V-6 Dak is 800 Ibs lighter than the V-8 Daks. Which means that the Ranger is 200 Ibs heavier than the V-6 Dak. That's my two cents in on this Ranger B.S. Greg

Wouldn't want any other!

Unfortunatelly guys.. with the sorces that Arthur posted.. I have to tend to lean his way.. No one else has sited any sources.

Stealwing is correct about the resale value but if your going to lift it and heavly modify it.. you can throw that book out the window.

Yes I did go w/ a Mercury Cougar why? b/c I got a sweet discount threw my company on Ford products and I needed something cheep. For $13k with 170 hp (143 rwhp) and a 5-speed the Cougar was easly the best price for the power.

arthur - Good luck with your Ranger.. I must admit .. as well planed as you have that.. ur going to miss the good looks of the Dak. I know I sure do.

I hear ya on the Ford plan deal. We did the same for my wife. Fords still suck but you can't beat the price at no dealer markup through the Ford plan. Inv price and 0% fin. I can live with it since it is not my car!

Enjoy the Cougar!

So Arthur, when you get that Ranger you gonna catch some air like last weekend in it?

Great Homework Bud!

Well as far as citing any sources, Ford can throw out all the figures they want and make it look good on paper but real world is what counts. I have owned both so I have been able to compare both. And theres NO WAY a ranger will smoke a Dakota, no way. Plus Even with a V-8 Dakota weighing more It still gets better gas mileage.
I'm even thinking of getting another dakota, That's how much I like it. Like I said before though, there are alot better choices out there with available lifts than a ranger. Plus I don't know if your looking at a reg cab or Extended cab but even and extended cab Ranger Doesn't have alot of room. Your gonna get whatever you want and that's cool, I just hope you have alot better experience with a Ranger than I did. First time you go to a Ford Dealers service department you may wish you didn't have a Fix Or Repair Daily!

Ok, i did some further searching into the Motor Trend Magazine World and this is what i found...

Dodge Dakota 4X4 w/ 4.7L QC-
0-60 in 8.1
60-0 in 128ft
curb weight - 4457lbs

Ford Ranger Edge 4X4 w/ 4.0L SuperCab-
0-60 in 8.6
60-0 in 124ft
curb weight - 3584lbs

So i stand corrected, the V8 Dak is faster.

I'll tell ya right now Arthur is the Dude!

We were at Pismo last weekend and these guys were stuck with no tow rope. He had a buddy to pull him out but NO Tow Rope! So Arthur pulls up to help as we usually do and they ask to borrow his strap. Arthur is well it is all hooked up to my D-ring and hitch I'll just pull ya and you are on your way. They wont have a Dakota or a Dodge for that pull there Chevy ass out! SO Arthur takes off the rope and stands and watches as they pull themselves out.

I may have done the same but that is a pretty crappy thing for them to do!

Arthur is a great Bud if you ever get a chance to hook up with him DO IT!

Wasn't trying to dis Arthur. Just had a hard time with the Ranger thing. Your right davage, it does take a bigger person to admit when they are wrong. Something very uncommon today. Also, Pismo is fun but they have there share of jerks like anywhere else. I seen a similar thing happen in Glamis a few weeks ago.
