I e-mailed Tuff Country tonight about the problem with the "burping" gear oil and their new skid plates to accomadate the lift.

Hello,

My name is Scott Daly and I am a representative member of www.dodgedakotas.com. I am writing you today to bring to light our concerns of gear oil "burping" through the front axle's vent hose all over the engine compartment. We currently have a thread discussing our possible options to try to deal with the problem and we wanted to know Tuff Country's position on this issue. After only one day on the boards, 4 out of 5 of Dakota owners with the Tuff Country suspension lift are having this problem. My friend Tom said that when he had the Tuff Country lift on his Dakota he had the same problem and contacted customer service to try to get the issue resolved but it was never taken care of. He has since converted to a solid axle. We would like to receive some help getting a grip on this problem directly from Tuff Country. Many Dakota owners post questions concerning lifting and we have always pointed them in your direction because of your quality products and excellent service. We would like to be able to inform our members that Tuff Country continues to provide outstanding effort in the development and quality of Dakota Suspension products.
I also noticed you have developed front skid plates to go with the Dakota lift. I hope these are going to be in stock or are already in you inventory. Several of our members, including myself, have been looking to get skid plates with this lift. If you have a contact number I would like to go ahead and order mine.
I am going to post this on the "raised dakota" board at www.dodgedakotas.com under the title "Email to Tuff Country". If you would like to respond to this email there that would be great. You don't have to be a member to post on a thread. Thank you for your time and Tuff Country's commitment to quality off-road and suspension products.

Sincerely,
Scott Daly

I got news back today...

Scott,

Thanks for your concerns about this issue. When installing the Tuff Country EZ-Ride Suspension system on the Dodge Dakota we are rotating the front differential. When we rotate the front differential, we need to make sure that enough differential fluid is making it back to the rear tail shaft bearings of the front differential. To accomplish proper lubrication, we have the customer/installer drill a ¾” hole 1 ¾” above the stock fill plug. We provide a new fill plug for the newly drilled hole. After installation of the front differential cover, we suggest using OEM approved differential fluid. Fill the fluid to the bottom of the new hole. We suggest this to ensure proper lubrication. Differential fluid is going to burp out of the vent hose until the fluid level reaches it proper level. We can not determine what this level is due to ride height inconsistencies. (Cranking of torsion bars) Fluid may burp out for a couple days it could take weeks maybe longer. Once the level reaches its proper level, burping will stop.

To help eliminate differential fluid from burping all over the engine compartment, use a small plastic sandwich bag and rubber band. Place the plastic bag around the vent hose and secure it using the rubber band. Monitor the bag and remove the bag once the differential fluid stops burping out.

If you have any other questions and or concerns, please do not hesitate to call or e-mail me.

The Skid plate part # is 90006. Let me know if you need me to ship you one out.

Thanks

Sean's having the same problem.. I've been scratching my head for a while on it. I was about to call Tuff Country when I saw your post. I'm not having this problem with my lift I'm thinking maybe trying a longer tube but that won't fix the problem it will only get around it.

Let me know what happens with this so Sean will quit asking me ;-)

Yeah, born2steel21, I think this 'work-around' solution to the problem is pretty ill conceived:

"To help eliminate differential fluid from burping all over the engine compartment, use a small plastic sandwich bag and rubber band. Place the plastic bag around the vent hose and secure it using the rubber band. Monitor the bag and remove the bag once the differential fluid stops burping out."

Is this bush league or what?

I saw in another post that there is an overflow reservoir tank that is available and I think this should be provided with the suspension kit to alleviate the problem caused by the 'rotated' axle housing. Tuff Country is causing the problem by the design of their kit so they should provide an acceptable and professional solution. JMHO.

I am also considering a suspension lift for my truck and I will monitor this thread to see if customer satisfaction is achieved.
