Had the body lift for a while now...no problems here with it. Maybe the installation was done a little bit wrong...check everything twice to make sure. Thanks for the tip on the brake line, tell me where exactly and ill check it out when i install my new ball joints.

Hey Chax. is there any good places to go wheelin around there. I've only been to a couple small local places and a few by star lake amp. I'm only right down 60s robinson/montour area. I'd really like to see what this 4x4 can do.

Ahh cool..good to have another dak owner near by. Well... i know one spot in Chippewa township....trail is small but some spots are hard...it has a 3 foot mud hole and some nasty muddy hills. But it's not long. You would get bored of it easily, unless it's raining ;) I tend to go out to East Brady, PA ...near butler...cuz it's the best off road place in PA..i swear to it. Unlimited trails. I heard there are alot of trails around beaver county but just haven't had the guts to explore...i don't wheel alone :) You know of any?

Ah man... I just now saw this thread. That
really sucks!! I can't say I have the same
problems on my truck, but I'm lookin' out for
anything wrong. I have about 13,000 miles on
my lifts and 33's, and the only thing I can think
of that might be a problem in the future is that
damn aluminum steering extension. Between
that, bad wheel balance and alignment, those
should be the only reasons for wheel
"shimmy" on our trucks with R&P.
As for the seals leaking... usually bad installs
can cause seals to break and leak a few
months later. I noticed that a hammer was
used (Chaximus?) to get the steering extender
on, that could definitely cause a seal to crack.
In which case, your rack should still be fine
(once you replace the seal and oil).
Ball joints with the Fabtech kit should actually
be a little better than stock. With
racing/performance parts you REALLY need to
stay on top of greasing ALL of the zert fittings
(2 on each arm, 1 per ball joint). Otherwise,
they wear out and can cause "slop" or bad
alignment and all kinds of un-fun stuff. I do
believe that our dakotas can handle 33's with
no problems. Sure, it will cause a little more
stress on the parts, but not enough to be
noticable... especially within 15,000 miles!
With big tires you need to balance them more
often. This is usually the biggest problems
with lifted trucks, all that shaking and
whoppling in the front end should be fixable
with good alignments and balancing.
Although, this still wouldn't mess-up your ball
joints. Hmmm...
This is just my 2 cents. I'm not saying anything
bad , just some things to consider. I hate
seeing my fellow 2wd owners having bad luck
with these set-ups! I think thses trucks look
AWESOME, it would suck if we couldn't keep
them this way! We'll figure this out!!

OK, i've done some research and talked with some of my buddies at www.mudnuts.org (my off road club) and they are telling me that off roading as much as i do, i should change the ball joints every 6 months. I took off the joints recently and they were very loose. Maybe the tires were wobbling and causing stress on the steering rack. I'm not sure, but i'm still looking into this. The rack is still leaking after using thicker STP leak sealer fluid. Until i come up with $500 for a new rack, i'm gonna figure out why it's leaking and the cause. About the steering extender, that has no involvement in the problems that i have. Fabtech, and my guys as mudnuts, say that the extender changes nothing in the steering. So count that out.

Hey Chaximus, I hope you get it all fixed. Your truck looks awesome the way it sits now, it would suck to have to remove the lift.

So is this a consistent problem with everyone? Are you having any problems tallquad? Can this be acounted to all the offroading? I had finally made up my mind to do this six inch lift but now Im getting worried again. I guess I shouldn't look at this forum until I get it finished or I'll scare myself off again! :)

I have not had any problems so far. Anything can break with enough usage, I just do everything with moderation since my truck is my daily-driver. I don't baby it, but I do try and avoid HEAVY off-roading. I still think the kits are great!

Hey, don't judge the kit by just one fella's problems. I know i'm experiencing quite a few problems with it, but tallquad's doing good. I do alot of heavy off-roading and really make use of the lift. So far, steering leakage and ball joints could be caused by off-roading. Overall, the kit is great and makes a good lookin truck look better. Keep checkin with tallquad and other's who have experience and see if problems pop up for them.

Ok so MOST likely the problems come with heavy usage? This would also be my daily driver that I plan on having for probably another 6 or so years at least. So tallquad, you don't have this steering "slop" that others complain of? Just curious, I am definitely gonna do something, still deciding if the extra inch between the two fabtech kits is worth the extra 500 smackers. Thanks.

Ahh, i just found a replacement steering rack for $100 at a junk yard. Had only 5000 miles on it and comes with a 91 day warranty. I'm a little awkward with that "91" day warranty...odd number but what the heck, why not...nearly new rack :)

$100!! Thats a steal! I've had good luck with
parts like that for my old Jeep, worked out
great. While your at it, see if there are any
"upgradable" parts you can add (broken or
not) that are inexpensive, like seals, boots,
brakes, shocks... anything that comes to mind.
Just a thought. I haven't really looked at
aftermarket parts for the Dakota (nothing has
broken, yet -knock, knock) so I'm not sure
whats out there.
Hey Jon, I think the "slop" people are getting in
the steering is coming from the body lift
extention that the kit comes with. I noticed the
slop after I installed the body kit, the steering
didn't change for me with the Fabtech. The
slop isn't bad but its there. I really don't notice
it unless I'm off-roading a lot. I say get the 3"
Fab kit with the a-arms!

Hey man, thanks for asking. What condition is it in? I mean miles, and how old? I can't really send him my current rack cuz i won't have anything to drive :( Anyway we can work around this? I lost the contact information of that person who had the rack for $100 and 91 day warranty...doh! But i came up with another contact, in NC who has the rack for $210 from a 2001 dakota.

Ok so if I do get the 3 inch fabtech kit where can I get it installed? I'm fairly confident I can get the body lift on there with a friends help but those coils scare me too much to mess with...I would like to live to see my truck lifted. Will sears automotive or a similar place do it? Also Tallquad, did you but your rims/tires from 4wheelparts.com? I noticed they were cheaper rang up seperately than in the package deal...just curious. Thanks

I got my wheels from Discount Tire. I have 3.92's and they work great. 3.55 should be fine, other owners on the board here say they aren't too bad. I would wait to add 4.11's unless you have the cash to spend. ;-)
