Im wanting to add a 3" body lift to my 97 Dakota but heard of a couple negatives. Ive read that body lifts arn't recemended for vehicles with airbags but I dont know why. Has anyone heard this before? I dont want an airbag blowing up while 4 wheelin.
Also will a body lift affect handling? Ive read that too and cant figure why on this either.
Either way I think my Dakota will grow a few inches this summer.

Hawkeye.. have you blow your air bag after the lift? :-)

I haven't heard of any problems with the airbags. The handling will be different because your center of gravity is higher. You ride quality should be the same though because you aren't changing any suspension.

The airbags will be fine. You just pull the fuse while you are installing the lift so you don't set them off removing the bumpers. Once your done you put the fuse back and you're good to go. Check out the group buy for the best deal, but hurry I don't know how long the price is good for.

Beleive it or not, your center of gravity doesnt really change much at all with a body lift. Al your heavy stuff, engine, frame, axles, etc, stay in the same place. The Cab doesnt exactly weigh a lot. It might change it a little, but not a lot.
As for the air bags, unlike when airbags first came out and impact sensors were in the bumpers, they are now activated by more advanced sensors. Not to go into a lot of technical detail, but the senors work off of centifugal force, not impact shock. Bumper relation has nothing to do with the airbags going off. Our Durango was hit in the side, nothing ever touched the front bumper, and both airbags deployed from the truck coming to such a quick stop (rear axle was ripped out from underneath it.). As 4wDakota said, you just remove the fuse while doing the lift so that any movement of the cab when lifting wont accidentally set them off.
