Subject: 4x4 poping noise?
IP: Logged

Message:
Has anyone had a problem with their front end making a popping noise while in 4wheel drive? I hadn't gone wheeling since I got my new ball joints, then about a 2 months later I got the bdy lift and the 33s and had to try them out. That was when I noticed the noise.

When does it make the noise? When turning sharp, when the susp is flexed hard? Also what kind of terrain are you in when it does it?

the noise happens while turning and while starting out from a stop. I have tried it in the mud, on a grass slope, crawling up a stump in loose soil and in gravle. All of the times I was in first gear and almost using no throttle. It almost sound as if something is binding.

that is crazy i have the exact same problem. I just installed my 3 inch body lift and i have the same exact noise that seems to be coming from my 4x4 shifter area. But there is one difference i it only does it when i am in 2 wheel drive and taking off from a start quickly. and when i accerlerate quickly in 4wheel drive it does not make the noise except for when i turn sharply. Have you extended your 4x4 shifter yet? I am thinking that is my problem???? i dont know?
write back to tell me more bout your problem because it sounds exactly like the problem i am facing. Was it Performance Accessories lift/

also check your fan shroud and see if there are any marks on it, possibly from your fan hitting it. Mine does and this might be the problem?
thanks again,

I did extend my 4x4 shifter, but I dont think not having it extended would cause the problem. It was the preformance accessories lift and I have had it on for about a month. I am going to check my fan shroud tommorow for marks. Keep me posted about your truck.

I found marks on mine and didnt know if there were old or new. So i put a piece of tape and went for a spin, popped the good and the tape was shredded. I took a closer look at my fan and found that one of the blades had been badly bent causing it to go out of round when it sped up and hitting the shroud, have no idea from what, but i just bought a new fan and will be installing it shorlty hoping this will fix my prob.

still don't know what the problem is. I made the extension from a 3in piece of threaded rod and a coupling nut. The kit also came with one which I will have welded in when I get time.
