(I posted this elsewhere in other areas of this website as well. Not sure if folks visit only one area - or browse around.) I backed the 99 SY Sport DAKOTA out of the driveway this morning and I hear this slight "popping" sound, sounds as if it's coming from the bed of my truck. To make a long story short, when I got to the office I stood on the rear bumper and rocked it up and down. Seems as if it's a pop in the left rear - above the left rear tire. Now, it's cold this morning here in Va., maybe that has something to do with it -- but I have never heard this sound before. The truck has 38K on it -- too early for new shocks I am sure. All 38K have been on smooth roadways. Maybe it's nothing, but thought I'd ask in here to see if anyone has had a similar experience. Hopefully, it'll go away when it warms up a bit. Thanks in advance - Jim

Knobbyman - both. Pops when I jump up and down on the rear bumber, and when it's in motion when I go over cracks/bumps in the road.

Jim B,
My current 2000 QC and former 99 CC both did this same thing. It was the leaf spring bushings and spring pack clamps that popped and cracked on mine. Try spraying silicone, Armor All, or something like that on the leaf spring eye bushings and/ or the clamps that hold the leaves together, and see if this helps. I have to spray mine about once a month to keep myself from going crazy. I can't stand to hear uneccessary sounds coming from my truck. The sound is caused by the bushings getting dry. Mine would actually stop making the noise for a few days after it would rain. Then it would come back. Let me know if this helps or not.

Thanks for all the tips from this forum. My suspicions were correct -- as soon as the weather warmed up a bit, the noise stopped. Came back again yesterday -- today -- (warm) and it's gone again. I will take your advice, however, and spray some silicone/WD40, etc. up in there. That should cure it. Again / Thanks --

Thank God! I am not going crazy, my 2001 CC 4x4 with only 6,500 miles has been doing the same thing on cold mornings over the past couple weeks from the driver side rear and I can't stand it anymore. I thought maybe I had a broken belt in the rear tire, but it is fine, everything was tight. Was going to have the dealer take a look at it during the next oil change since it didn't appear to be anything serious and the Flowmaster exhaust almost covers up the noise. I am spraying my bushings down with silicone tomorrow and see if it works, hope so. This website is the best I have found, the forum is great. Thinkin of joining up...

Knobbyman,
Try spraying your tailgate straps with silicone, etc. Spray them where they attach, and where they touch the bed/ tailgate. Work the tailgate up-and-down a few times before shutting it. This should get the lube everywhere it needs to be. I had a heck-of-a-time finding this squeak. I usually spray these at the same time as I spray my springs. If this doesn't work, try getting under the truck and spraying the leaves from the inside. Be sure you get the eye bushings real good. Let me know if any of this helps, or not. My '00 QC is the king of squeaks and rattles, so I may be able to help you figure out your noise.

I also had a "squeeking" sound, from day one when I owned it. Brought it to the dealer, they could never locate the source. I finally loacted the problem. Open the tailgate. The two "posts" on either side, the silver ones that the latches hook onto when you close the gate. On each I put one layer (won't close well with two or more) of electrical tape around the post. Squeek went away. I have had the truck for 2.5 years now, have had to replace this tape many times (every few months) -- but I'll be damned -- no more squeek.

Well the squeaking went away maybe the wd-40 just had to work it's way in. I'm going to try that electrical tape just because anyway..

Thanks for all the info guys.

My truck did the same thign after only about 19000. Took to the dealer and after two days of "we can't get it to make any noises" I went in and it did it right away for me, just like I told them. They had it another day, and had the problem fixed. They had to replace all bushings and bed bolts, don't know which was causing the problem, but it was cured. Good luck. by the way it was all done under warranty.

There is a TSB that is related to the type of noise you all are complained about. It involves
replacing all of the leaf spring bushings with updated ones. This bulletin was for the Durango, but I am pretty sure the Dakota has the same type of bulletin.
If you are not going to replace them, then coat them with the same type of lube you spray on dirt bike drive chains & sprockets, this stuff does not wash off. You can find chain spray at any motor cycle shop the sells dirt bikes.

Sorry, can't tell you more, contact your Dealer

PS

DON'T SPRAY WD40 on bear metal! It is a corrosive solvent, it will cause your truck to rust out. It is highly corrosive because it needs to eat away at rusted parts. If you leave it on bear metal, it will rust, or rot out faster than if it was not sprayed at all. If you use it, then use it to clean and or free up the part, then wash it off, and lube part with a grease, or a silicon type of oil.
I knew somebody that sprayed their wheel wells with WD40 on a regular bases, guess what, the wheel wells rusted out, and the rest of the truck was fine.
Thought you should know

Bruce
