Subject: 4x4 shifter and 3inch body lift
IP: Logged

Message:
SO I got my body lift on and i skipped the step of lengthening my 4x4 shifter. At first i thought this was no big deal because I read someone in this forum had done the same thing and had no problems except for being able to put the shift boot on. That does not seem to be the case here, when i am at a complete stop and put the pedal to the floor for quick accerlation there is this terrible noise that seems to come from the 4x4 shifter box. But when I put it in four wheel drive there is no bad sound. What the heck is goin on here? The light goes off to indicate it is out of four wheel drive, but i think the sound is from it being in between 4HI and 2WD. Any suggestions? I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced this? And what is the bend you are supposed to put on the shifter when i do get around to welding it?
thanks,
brock

What year? What kind of a noise? Grinding? I'm asking because that will help answer the question. 97-99 4X4 shifters are directly attached to the transfer case. 00 shifters use a linkage and have a different shift pattern than the 97-99.

I have a 1999 CC, and it is a grinding noise. I think it is coming from the 4x4 linkage. It is hard to pinpoint the noise.

I'm not familiar with exactly how the 97-99 shifter works so I can't say for sure. But I'll throw this out for thought...

It could be that in response to the twisting of a full throttle launch, the short shifter hits something (the hole in the body it passes through?) and ends up attempting to engage 4WD.

Just a thought. But I'd lengthen the shifter like the instructions said to see if that helps.

the grinding is from your truck not fully disengaging 4x4. if you messed with the linkage at all when you did the lift, you may have adjusted it incorrectly. If you didn't touch the linkage, the rubber boot is too tight and when you get on the gas, the transfer case pulls just a little further than the shifter boot will allow. This pulls the shifter part way into 4x4. Fix this ASAP!

I just realized that I have the same exact problem as Thrash1. Do you mean get it fixed ASAP by getting the shifter extended. I have also realized this is a popping noise, not a grinding noise. I could use more help, please.

Let's put it this way...any noise that shouldn't be there is a concern...and should be fixed...pronto! It's better to shell out some cash and have a professional look at it and fix it then to try and do it yourself and ruin a transfer case and then have to shell out serious cash. Drive it easy with 4HI to a shop...then let them take care of it.
