im sure this has been asked a million times but i cant seem to get anyone who knows what they are talking about around here because nobody has a dakota. i have a 98 4x4 3.9 v6 dakota club cab. i am running 31x10.5 bfg a/ts on stock wheels. looks good but im about to have to buy new tires anyways so im wanting to go ahead and put a 3 inch body lift and try to run 33x11.5's. my first question is will i need to regear? i dont know what the stock gears are but everyone seems to think 3.92. i just need to know if its hurting the transmission or the engine if i dont regear and will i lose a terrible amount of power? and also will there be frame rubbing? i wanted to go with 33x12.5's but i would be gaurenteeing rubbing so im going with 11.5's. i just really dont want to have to do any trim work. anyone that can give some advice that would be great!

Well put it this way, when i went to larger tires i re-geared but i re-geared up to 3.90 and that brought me up to exactly where i was with the smaller tires, if your already at 3.92 try it out, but you could be at 3.55 and in that case your gonna need to re-gear for sure so you better find out what gears you got. 12.5 would rub for sure, 11.5 on a 98 with 3" bl might be do-able problem is everyone says something different, mines a 94 so my wheel wells are smaller and i had major trimming to do, you might also look for your 3" body lift first i hear that a 3 is hard to find, most are 2.

I dont recall the gears being that expensive, i did mine many years ago so i dont remember the cost of the gears but remember you need gears front and rear, i had a friend of mine who worked at the local racetrack install them and thats where i think it gets expensive so lets put it this way if you want 33's its gonna cost you and cost you big.

Some good advice from Bucket there. While I don't regret gearing to 4.10, it was pricy. As he suggests, the important thing (and the pricy part) is that they be installed correctly. If you are seriously considering this, you would be much better off getting price estimates from someone reputable who does this in your area.

alright guys i appreciate all of that. if its going to cost me that much its not even worth it, i would prolly just think about a little 2 inch lift with 32's and spacers, that would at least make it look a little tougher. but one thing i wanted to add was i have a friend who has an old ass 80's model toyota tacoma with a 4 cylinder, its a small little truck, he slapped a body lift on it and runs 33's no problem without regearing and it doesnt seem to effect the shifting granted the gas mileage is a little worse now. i was just wondering why if a guy with a 4 cyl can run 33's safely without regearing then why wouldnt i be able to with my v6?

I have a 99 dak 4x4 V8 with a three inch body lift and am already running 32x11.5 tires with stock rims and very light frame rubbing, next month I am stepping up to 33x12.5 and I am getting 2" spacers and new 15x10 rims with 3.5" backspacing to correct the rubbing and tire wear issues on the 8 inch rims with that wide a tire. The only problem is that no one and I mean NO ONE makes 15x10 rims in the dakota bolt pattern so my spacers are actually going to be adapters to the chevy bolt pattern. I have no problem with power yet with 3.92 gears but I also have headers, exhaust, a cam and a chip. Hope this helps.

Drake, I don't see where anyone told you it would be unsafe to run 33's without regearing. Although it would help if you had to get out of the way of something in a hurry. I suffered with two of those gutless Toy four bangers for years for the gas milage when I was younger. Never again. Those trucks are dogs with 235's. If I had to suffer one with 33's I'd be looking for a bridge abutment to aim for...

I have an 03 with a 4.7 and put a 3" body lift and 33x11.5's on a little over a year ago. I didn't regear but I did put in a tru-speed which changes the trucks computer so it's shift points and speedometer are correct. I have no problem moving the 33's with the 4.7, not sure what it would be like with the 3.9. The tru speed definitely helped get rid of the sluggishness and indecisiveness of the tranny.

Drake i dont think we are at 100% on what gears you have now, so the way i see it you got a 50/50 shot at being ok. As for the toyota i look at it this way, toyota's dont have any power to start with so he hasnt noticed any difference, try drive his truck once and imagine thats what your truck will be like and see if thats ok. Moving up in tire size is not as easy as some might think, all the advise you get in here is from people like me that went thru this process, I had no idea my truck had 3.21 gears but i bought it used so who knows what was done prior then when i put larger tires on it, its a dog so now its gears and then its u-joints and then its this and that so i ended up here at this website where others like Kowalski and Bob Lincoln, daddio,Larry and such who know hella more than i do, can throw me a bone. So just a heads up that you might need other things is something to keep in mind cause once you start with the tires theres no stopping now, and my tires are only 32.

i have never heard of the true speed thing your talking about what is it exactly and how much are we talking? and bucket i do appreciate the advice man, i didnt really expect yall to know everything about my truck cause i dont even know the gears either lol i bought it used just like you did. i mean if they usually put the 3.55's on it im gona guess thats what they are but who knows. im thinking about just doing 32's with smaller lift and spacers since it may be a little more safe. im not wanting to spend a fortune on this truck

My truck has 3.55 gears and it's fine with the 33's although I had to do some trimming.
