Looking into doing a real cheap lift on my 97 2wd v6 dakota. It's for nothing more than looks and I only want a little lift so i was wondering if this would work. Get the coilover springs off a ram from a junkyard and put em on my dakota. Will they fit? If so, they sould give about 2-3" right? Then for the rear I was thinking about getting the shackles off of any full size truck with a 2.5" leaf spring. These shackles will be longer, and with the way the dakotas are set up I should get 1-2" of lift. Anyone done this? Hopefully it'll work because it'd be really cheap. i'm also not too concerned with the ride comfort cause it already sucks...

Where are you going to find coilovers for the brand new 1500 rams cheap, junkyard or not? Rams have only been using coilovers for 1-2 years now.

And also if you put longer shackles on the rear springs you will be lowering the truck not lifting it.

dodge has had coil springs in the front since 94 on the 1500s
93 and earlier were leaf, which is why lift kits for genI rams are dirt cheap

The 4x4 Ram 1500 only had front coils from 94-2001. 2002 the 1500 was switched to IFS with torsion bars, like the Dakota 4x4, until 2006 when they changed again to a coil over design. It's actually closer to a strut in design now.

Anyhow, I don't think the 1500 springs would be a good choice. There is a big difference in the weight of the trucks and the spring rate may be too stiff. You'll also need to make plenty of modifications to the control arms and mounts to make room for the taller spring. By the time you're done with the parts and labor, you'll probably end up spending more than the cost of an existing 2wd lift kit on the market.

The truth is, anything is possible, the real question is, is it practical.

I know that rams have been using coils since 94 but he said coilOVERS not coils. Rams have only had coilOVERS for a year or so.

is there really that big a difference in the weight between a ram and a dakota? Both came with the same engine.

97 SLT CC 2wd is 3762 curb weight

RAM
97 SLT laramie CC 2wd SB is 4575 curb weight

97 SLT Laramie CC 2wd LB is 4658 curb weight

that's diff of either 813 or 896 lbs

I got the data from edmunds.com

The 97 SLT Laramie 2wd LB 4x4 is 5093 curb weight a diff of 1331.

Were there any difference between 4x4 ram and 2wd ram as part as suspension?
