MY 98 dodge dakota 4x4 5.2 a/t, tuff country 5.5 lift, 33 bfgs, 3.55 gears, no cat, magna flow exhaust, electric fan, flow tech headers,101,000 miles, will jump rpm's. For example i will be driving crusing at 60 mph with the o/d on. rpms will be at 1650 then all of a sudden jump to 1900 rpm. now i know the truck is still in o/d and is not shifting to 3rd. when this happens i just lighty let off the gas and then press back down to where it was. the rpms will go back at 1650 but then a few minutes later same problem happens again. i have already changed tps sensor, no fix. can this have anything to do with having 33s and cause the trany to push to a higher rpm because of the weight of the tires? and if so will 3.90 or 4.10 gears correct this rpm jump. Does any one have an idea what might be the problem? any info will help thanks.

Almost deffinately because of the 33s and what it is doing is slipping in and out of tourque converter lock-up. There are a couple of different things that could cause this the easiest thing to check is to adjust the kick down cable for the transmission. It could also be a bad solenoid in the trans valve body or the tourque converter itself. When you put 33s on a dakota and don't install gears to compensate for the different height and weight of the tires you are putting a lot more stress on your trans. If the tourque converter is the problem you can go ahead and start shopping for a new transmission.
And put some gears in too 4.10s at least it will help your transmission out a lot trust me.

thanks for the info.. now about this kick down cable, where is it located and how do i adjust it? does this need to be done at a tranny shop? and for the past few months i have been debating on what size gears i should change too... i dont do very much highway driving, so i think 4.10 is the best bet

ok. I found out how to adjust the kickdown band in my haynes manual. i think ill take it to a tranny shop and have them adjust it... But what does this do when the band is adjusted? How does this affect the overdrive(the book doesnt explain)?

The adjustment should be up at the throttle cable bracket on the rear side of the throttle body. When you open the throttle it pulls that cable which lets the transmission know how much throttle input you are giving the truck. This cable could be adjusted a little too tight on your truck making the transmission think you are pushing the gas pedal harder than you are. I'v heard of all kinds of funky transmission concerns caused by an improperly adjusted kickdown cable. Honestly i have no idea how to adjust this cable never had to do it on a Dodge.
