Subject: Axle Swap???

I'm currently over here in Iraq in support of operation Iraqi Freedom and i'm wanting to do something drastic to my Dak when i get back. With all the bonus money and all i'll have saved up.

Has anyone ever heard of someone doing a solid axle swap up front? I was thinking a solid front axle with a basic leaf spring setup. I was going to upgrade gears while i'm at it and i know i'll have to make the rear the same.

I know with enough $$ anything can be done but how far out there is this? Any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yep, it's been done. There are about 30 SAS Dakotas that I can think of off the top of my head. We had a thread a while back on DodgeTruckWorld.Com where a couple of us were keeping track of all the ones we found. It's an outdated thread and some of the image links are dead but it'll give you a good idea.

I've seen it done with a multitude of donor axles but it seems like early Ford axles are to most common. The Dana 44 from a 78-79 Bronco/F150 seems to be pretty common but the guys who have wheeled them hard with big tires have had some issues with the outers snapping. I'm using a set of D60s from a 79 F350 for my swap. Next you'll need to decide what type of suspension you'll want to run. Again, I've seen it done multiple ways. Leafs, Coils and coil-overs. Leafs and coils are the easiest, coil-overs are the most expensive.

Not to send you away, but the best place to get an answer to this is pirate4x4.com. But be warned, they are not newbie friendly, make sure you search their forums very well before asking a question, because if it's been asked and answered before, they will barbecue you with flames. There are a number of threads about the topic so you should be able to find most of what you need there.
