Subject: HELP..Swapping AWD for 2WD
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi guys, ive spent countless hours trying to research this and really havnt gotten anywhere, here is my problem,

I have the NV244 AWD transfer case, I hate the AWD and really do NOT need it because I live in Arizona and it never rains or snows here. I hate the fact that my front diff is being used when it doesnt need to be . SO I wanna swap my NV244 out for the NV233 selectable 2wd/4wd transfer case.

OK sounds simple enough right?

No it really isnt because apparently the AWD Driveshafts are shorter than the 2WD ones. This is the reason that the Rancho 2000+ Lift will NOT work on AWD trucks. I cant even find what the difference is between the two driveshafts that makes it not usable for the AWD. My question to all you guys here is what will I haveto swap out if i put the NV233 in place of the NV244 AND is it even possible? Will it bolt right up with the old driveshaft thats connected to it right now? or will i haveto get new driveshafts.

ALSO, what about the selector in the cab? will the one that says AWD 4HI 4Lo work or will i haveto get a whole new switch and everything?

ANY INFO ON SWAPPING THESE TWO TRANSFER CASES WOULD BE A GREAT HELP FOR ME. I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR WEEKS ON INFO ON THIS AND I JUST CANT GET THE WHOLE IDEA OF WHAT THE SWAP WILL INVOLVE.

Even if you switch to a selectable transfer case, the front diff is still 'being used' to turn the front drive shaft. All the running gear is turning all the time, unless you're one of the lucky ones with manual locking front hubs. When you select 4WD, all that happens is the transfer case locks the connection to the front shaft.
