Subject: OK - so 285's don't fit!

I finally got a solid answer to this question first hand. 285/75's won't fit my '03 quadcab 4x4 with torsion bars cranked and blocks. My tire shop was cool enough to mount one up and let me look at it at no cost. It clipped the front bumper and back of the front innner well. With a body lift, it should be perfect. So, needless to say I'm ordering it online after posting this.

I've searched alot of posts on this site and people's experiences are 50/50 if they will fit or not.

I went through the same a few years ago. Local tire shop showed me trying to run those tires on stock suspension and rims was impossible. FYI, going taller, gear ratio comes into play.

I'd hate to say I told you so. 265/75/16 is the biggest you can go on stock suspension. I run these without any rubbing at all, however at full lock there is less than inch clearance left. 285/75/16s will rub bigtime.

Something to think about, even if you bodylift the tires will still rub inside the fenderwell unless you change the backspacing on the wheels. Remember you are only raising the body, the frame is still there, so you have to run a wheel with less backspacing to push the tires out from the frame. The bodylift will solve the height clearance issue, but it's the width of the tire that is the problem.

8banger - you can say I told you so! You've given me alot of good info since I've joined this site.

I just can't justify to myself (or my wife!) spending around $700 to just go up 1" and no wider. My truck has the 265/70's from the factory. I am prepared to deal with some frame rub at full lock, the tire center said they tell people all day long that certain tires will rub, most just choose to live with it. I don't do any offroading so I won't be racking the suspension.

Thats cool, as long as you don't mind a little rub at full lock you should be ok.

Hey, try to post some pics when your done, I'd like to see how those 285/75/16s look.

Hello,
I just bought a 3" body lift for my wife's 2003 Dakota Quad. DOes anyone know the biggest tire we can fit once it is up? Also, we re going to try and do the work ourselves this Saturday (1-28-06). Do I need to know any secrets?
Thanks for your time...
-Chris

Generally people mount 33x12.5 with some aftermarket wheels. I have the same set up with 32s. Unless you get wheels with less backspacing they will rub at full lock.

I have heard of guys running 35s with a lot of trimming or even a off road bumper. good luck

I think the tire rub varies for the individual truck. Mine don’t 3" BL and no TB crank. But I did move the bumper out 3/4 inch.

For Chris: www.dodgedakotas.com/boards/raise/3216.html when I put on a PA 3" BL on 2002 QC AWD.

I have Dunlop Mud Rovers 285/75/16 NO rub at full lock. If you use the gap guards, make sure you push them back against the frame to the corners so they don't catch on the tires. Also you can drill the front bumper support about 1/4 inch and pull the bumper forward for about 3/4 inch more clearance with the slop in the holes. If your radiator hose has the rubber heat guard, pull it over the extension to hide it.

I'm looking at mounting 285/75/16's on my '04 QC 4wd, what I'm thinking of doing is crank the torsion bars, 3" bl, and use 1" spacers and stock 16x8 rims (so I basicaly have 4.5 for my backspace instead of 5.5).....if anyone has tried any of this stuff before and it hasnt worked out for them let me know. also, the tires I'm looking at are goodyear wrangler duratrac, anyone had any experience with these tires?
