If it’s a 4x4, the only kit available for a pre-97 Dakota is the TrailMaster 4” kit. If you click on the image of my Dakota below, it’ll take you to the webpage I created for the installation of that kit on my ’88. I have details of the installation and a .PDF copy of the TrailMaster installation instructions.

I have a 92 Dakot 4X2 5.2L V8 I just ordered the Rough Country 2" lift kit and I wanted to know does this mean that I have to relocate the leaf springs above the axle or would the kit do the job without all that?

PA has a 2" body lift, that should allow you to run 31's with the right backspacing.

As indicated above, the only suspension lift available for the 91-96 Dakota is the Trailmaster DD43 (4") kit. Nothing is available for the 87-90 Dakota. The DD43 can be modified to use on the earlier Dakota but will require a considerable amount of additional work. You'll basically have to replace your lower control arms, knuckles, steering components and a few other items with same parts from a 91 or 92 Dakota to install the kit onto your 89. While it is possible, it's a lot of work and quite costly for just 4" of lift. Also, in hind-sight, the durability of the Trailmaster suspension leaves a lot to be desired if you plan on doing anything more extreme than very mild off-road use. For the amount of money invested, it was a waste of money.

Walt...thanks for the info and pics.....we are interested in installing the trailmaster kit onto our 92 4X4.....since the Dodge is a 92, and no modifications would have to be made, do you think it would be worth it? We will only be doing mild off-roading (mainly mud) on the deer lease

Never seen a Snorkel for the Dakota offered, but I have suspected a snorkel for a late model Jeep Cherokee could modified if you relocate the battery and use a Jeep airbox. That was on my list of future projects.
