DEAR MEMBERS:

PLEASE LEND ME YOUR EXPERT OPINIONS. I HAVE A 97 5.2 4X4, HIGH SIDE ON MILD CONVERSIONS, BODY LIFT (I KNOW...) W/ 33X12.5 R15'S (ITS SHAVED. I KNOW....). OBVIOUSLY I NEED TO CHANGE GEAR RATIOS. MY GOAL OUT OF THE CHANGE WOULD BE TO 1) GET AT LEAST 1 MILE BACK ON THE MPG., AND 2) TO GET MY OVERDRIVE TO WORK LIKE IT DID (OR CLOSE TO IT) WHEN IT WAS STOCK. OD DOESNT WANT TO KICK IN AT NORMAL RPM'S, AND WHEN IT DOES, BETTER STAY ON THE PEDAL, CAUSE IT WILL CUT OFF IF YOU DONT. ITS A 97, SO IM SURE A COMPRESSION CHECK WOULD BE ANOTHER STEP, BUT FOR NOW, ID LIKE OPINIONS AS TO WHAT GEAR RATIOS TO SWITCH TO. THANKS GUYS.

A popular gear ratio for 33x12.50's is 4.10... as stated by 4 Wheel Parts.

Hey Rivalry does that go for automatics and 5 spd manual?I put 32s on my 94 and now 5th gear is useless, and i was thinking 390 would put me back to where i was before the tire change.I dont want to be cruising down the freeway in 5th at 3000 rpm,Original tire size was 30.Does 4 wheel have a chart online?

Has your speedo been corrected for the tire size?

If not, do so and then check your fuel mileage. When the speedo is off, so is the odometer so you actually go farther than the odometer thinks. See what I mean?

4.10 should be good for you. What do you have now?

HEY RIVALRY AND CAULK, THANKS FOR THE REPLIES. CAULK, I HAVE 3.55 ON A 12 BOLT 9.25 (4X4). THE 33'S ARE SPINNING ON 15X1O'S. THE TRANNYS SEARCHING ALL OVER GODS GREEN EARTH WHEN IM ON THE INTERSTATE GOING UPHILL. OD KICKS IN BETWEEN 75 TO 80 @ 3500RPM'S AT TIMES! THAT SUCKS!!! SOMEONE TOLD ME THAT 4.10 MIGHT BE TOO MUCH, ILL BE INSTALLING THE 3" RANCHO SOON, ON TOP OF THE 3"BL. IM NOT SURE IF THATS GOING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. I LIVE ON THE GULF COAST SO THE TERRAINS PRETTY FLAT BUT I DO TRAVEL TO TN SOMETIMES. ID SURE HATE TO PUT IN 3.92'S & STILL HAVE HER ACTING SLUGGISH. I HAVE MUCH RESPECT FOR THE 1/4 MILERS, BUT IM NOT GOING THAT ROUTE. I WANT TO BE ABLE TO TAKE OF FASTER THAN STOCK (BUT NOT HAVE TO WEAR A MOUTH PIECE), AND BE ABLE TO RUN HER AT 70/80 (WHEN PASSING) ON I-10 W/O PUSHING THE PEDAL THROUGH THE FLOORBOARD TO DO SO.

THANKS GUYS!

Thats strange. I have the same truck only I have 35's and I have no problems with it. The gas mileage is down to like 13 but that isn't much worse than what it was before. As far as overdrive, I still kicks in at the same RPM, I'm just going faster when it kicks in. You may have a problem where the motor is making the power it should and then it'll be up and down between gears trying to maintain speed.

I had 3:55 with 32 and it was ok. 1800 rpm at 70 kinda sluggish. I went to 33s and that totally sucked, Overdrive would not kick in till 75 or 77mph. Finally I got 4:10s for my 33 BFG A/T and now at 70, I'm at 2200. A little high of RPMs but great for towing my boat and in town use. Always got power. I would not go lower or higher for 33s. Long distance trip not so great but I love the 4:10s. BFG tires run a little small so I'll jump up one size tire next year on my purchase to even things out. I'm getting 12mpg city and 13 hwy....sometimes 14 if I drive right at 67mph.
