Subject: Different way to lift a 2wd?
IP: Logged

Message:
Does anyone know what the differences are between the GenIII and GenII front suspensions on the two wheel drive trucks?

One of my ongoing thought processes is how to raise my 2wd Daktota 5-7" inches (2-4" taller than a 4x4). The rear supsension is eary enough, but the front is the tricky part. Seems the only way to lift our 2wd front ends is to add longer coils or coil spacers, both ways just adding stress to the front end. Taller spindles would be the best way I can figure, but of course no one makes any for the GenII's. So I am wondering how different GenIII parts are from GenII parts? Could one of the lift kits for a GenII 2wd be adapted "relatively" easily to fit a GenII?

Is a straight axle conversion my only way to get the ground clearance I want and the tough look my girl wants?

3" body AND 3" suspension... That puts a 2wd 3" higher than a stock 4x4. The most your ever gonna get is 9" total for the front, IF new spindles ever come out (3" body + 3" coils + 3" spindles). Other than that, your looking at a total CUSTOM tear-down and all new suspension! Yikes!! My 02 QC still looks pretty tough at only 6"!! ;-)

Wanna see how to lift a 2wd Dakota

go to http://www.maxtire-4x4.com/DakProject.html

the rear was raised by reversing the axle it will give you 7 inches of lift in the rear by adding blocks

Nice set-up your getting there DakotaDave! If I had the extra vehicle and money I would probably do the same. How much lift did you get without the blocks when you flipped the rear axle? I was thinking about 4-5 inches...? Can't wait to see your new ride all finished!!!!!

Dak Dave
If you use a flip kit in the rear of your 2wd Dak, how do you plan on lifting the front end to match that huge lift in the back? All I can think of is the 3.5 inches you get from a Fabtech uppercontrol arm and coil. Even if you did tork the torzion bars to the max, all you would get total in the front would be close to 4 inches right? I'm just wondering, cuz I had a '97 2wd dak, and had the Fabtech suspension and body lift and all I could roll were 33's

To answer both of your questions
simple

The front will be raised by inserting 2 12 inch King Coil over shocks...the coil over shocks will be attached to a solid axle I got from a 1980 jeep wagonner... the stabilizer bars are custom built which will keep the axle in place since I removed the A arms. A stabilizer bar will keep the axle from swaing. I removed the A arms and cut a whole were the coils were located.... The coil over shocks therefore will go thru the frame thru the hole were the coils were and they will be attached to shock hoops inside the engine compartment.

The rear was lifted .... NO KIT... by
1st adding an add a leaf...
3 inch block
I removed the axle from the U bolts and reversed it.

I welded two new purches opposite were the factory purches were so that I could put the block on top of the new purches and then my leafs.
I did have to buy a longer U bolts to accept this huge lift

Total Lift 12 1/2 inches rear
Total Lift 13 front
this includes a 3 inch body lift I had previusly installed

by the way... the coil over shocks ....are adjustable so if I want to lift my truck higher is just a matter of turning a wrench to get more lift and putting a bigger block in the rear axle.

Wow, that's an interesting way of finding some height for your 2wd Dak, very cool. All you could fit were 33's on 13 inches of lift in the front?

I can fit 38's if I wanted to .... I decided to stay with 35's for practicality. If I want to lift my truck again .. all I have to do is tighten my shocks... which expands them. I will have a stiffer ride if I do that ...

Hey everyone!

Has anyone used the Dakota 4x4 torsion bar air kit? I saw one listed at 4 wheelers supply and I was just wondering how it worked. They call it a Porkchop.

Thanks,

Tim
