Subject: Gen I, II Fiberglass Fenders
IP: Logged

Message:
I contacted Glassworks Unlimited, below was their response on Gen I, II fenders:

Question:
Is it a typo(1995-2002 Dodge Dakota) on your web site or do you actually have fenders that will fit my 1995? If you do, I would like to purchase a pair.

Answer:
The Dodge Dakota fenders are for the new Dodge
we are working in the older body style and should be done in June.

Being a former "desert rat" from Ridgecrest CA, I have my fingers crossed.

Another question. Are Gen I and Gen II fenders the same? The 2 truck styles look exactly alike except for the front grill. What about spindles? Are they similar? Thanks.

The changes made in 91 to the nose were to the radiator support, grill, bumper, lower valance and hood. It’s the same cab and fenders 87-96. Gen 1, Gen 2 & Gen 3 are a DML created designation. The official Dodge designation is by body type. 87-96 = “N” Body and 97+ = “AN” Body.

Walt, your saying that 1987-96 Daks can all use the same fender right? What type of tire gain would I get from this. I run 31x10.50s now. With a fender thats a wider wheel well, seems like a larger tire could be found to fit. Thanks.

Personally, I don’t think the Glassworks fenders are going to make much of a difference in the size of the tire you can run. At most you may be able to go up a tire size (i.e. 32 vs. 31). The fact still remains that if you remove the inner shield piece at the rear of the wheel well, you only gain about ¾” additional space before hitting the floorboard. You can’t open the well up much more than it is without affecting the floor. It’s the same reason that Bushwacker doesn’t offer a cutout flares for the early Dakotas. There is a space limitation inside the wheel well and most vendors won’t offer products that alter the structural integrity of the floor for liability reasons. The Glassworks fenders probably won’t give you much more coverage than a stock fender with a Bushwacker Extend-a-Flare.

Thanks Walt, man how did you get so knowledgable about Daks. Other than building one of the baddest ones on earth! I wish our Daks were more capable of being lifted and customized. In order to do anything, there are 3 other things you gotta do first It seems. Well, thanks for the info. Talk to ya later.

Walt,
I'm sayin' what you're knowin' about floorboard clearance. Right now with 15x8 589's and a 2" body lift, the ONLY place I am rubbing is on the rear of the fender opening. If glass fenders can give me an extra inch in this area I believe I can run 33's without ANY rubbing once I install my suspension lift(still moving into a new house. Pieces are hanging on nails in the garage!). If I am lucky, they will even cover the tire. How is clearance with your Bushwackers? Any rubbing at full lock while backing up? And do they cover the tire? That may be the way I have to go eventually. Thanks. Nice rig by the way.

The fiberglass fenders are primarily for a custom look design, not necessary to give added clearance or allow bigger tires, etc. I doubt they would ever make any Gen I fenders, but hey, if they do, I'm standing in line for some! (All I need is black)

I’m just saying that I don’t believe they will make much of a difference in the size of the tire we could run. I currently have a set of 33x14.50 Baja Claws mounted on a set of 15x10 beadlock rims with a 3” back spacing. My truck has a 4” suspension lift, 3 in body lift and cranked up torsion bars. My Bushwackers are both cracked where the Claws caught the flare on the bottom rear edge of the wheel well. Of course, when that had happened, I had the wheels full lock with opposite rear tire about 4 feet of the ground so the average person probably would have the same problem. I like the Bushwackers, but the thin ABS plastic is prone to cracking when hit against something. They provide about 3” of coverage, about 2” short of what I need for the claws I’m running, but I like the look of the tires sticking out a little. I’m with TigerDak on this one; I would probably buy a set of fenders myself for the more custom off-road look.

I was talking to a guy who had a Ford Ranger with fiberglass fenders, and he said any truck can have these fenders made for them. You have to have a professional aftermarket company make a mold first, then anybody can order them. He told me it costs around $800 to make the mold, and then you pay to have your fenders made and shipped to you. If this is true, I wonder if we can get a few of us together to chip in maybe $50-$100 each to get the molds made. Then we would pay whatever it costs to have the fenders made for us and shipped.

Is there anyone out there who would consider this in the months ahead?

HI guys, you know I am looking for anything to set my truck apart from the ave. Dak here in FLA. I was hoping the fenders would allow me to run larger tires but any little bit is worth it to me. I want 33x12.50s soooooo Bad. Ok, back to fenders. If fiberglassunlimited.com says they will make them, why dont we all get together and send them info on our wants, and a list of people who are intrested in them and just maybe they will make the fenders for us. There seems to be sufficient demand here for them and I am sure there are others out there would would buy them too. By the way, what do you do about the rear fenders? Do you keep the bushwackers, or try to get rear fenders made? what do you think? Thanks

5 Inches total my friend. It really sucks that I have to put her up that far to run 31s! I have a 3in body lift and a 2in suspen. lift. I am looking into getting a 3in AIM lift and removing the 2in spacers I have in there now. I want to someday run 33x12.50s but I need spindles to do that. I am hoping someone is going to come out with some. Or I will have to have them custom made. But I will get them before too long. Talk to ya later.

what size tires do you think i can get with no lift but the torsion bars cranked (and is that where you got the 2" suspension lift from?)

Super Bee,
I wish I could get up there like Walt. But I think it is just not in the cards right now. His 4x4 has 2-3in. over me stock. Then we both share a 3in body, But he cranked the T-Bars like 2in., and has a 4in Susp lift. I am waiting for someone to design a 3in lift spindle for us 2wd ers. Then I would have like 9in of lift and could run my 33s. Cant wait.
I really have no expierence with 4x4 Daks. From what I have heard, you can run 31x10.50 with a 2 in body lift. Dont know about the T- bars only and tires. I got my 2in spacer lift from Rough Country. It came with spacers, rear add-a-leafs, and all Heckelthorn shocks for like $150.00. Not bad really. I am looking to install a 3in susp. lift from AIM right now. Just need cash. I know Day Star has 4x4 spacers. given a shot. And good luck with your Dak.
