Subject: Wet Traction on MT/R's or Mud Terrains
IP: Logged

Message:
Needs some help from my big tire friends. I'm looking to by some 33" tires for my 2004 QC, 3" lift. I more going for the bad ass look of having rugged tires, rather than the ability to get through the mud. Not much mudding happening in may area of CT.

I like the Goodyear Wrangler MT/R's and the BF Goodrich Mud Terrain T/A. A local tire dealer told me to stay away from mud tires unless you plan to use them mostly in the mud because they are horrid on wet road conditions. He recommended that I go with a BF Goodrich All Terrain. Nice tire, but not as bad ass.

Anyone have the MT/R's or the Mud Terrain's that can comment on their driving ability in the rain and snow?

Thanks

Hey Jetsfan8099, I just picked up a set of 32" MT/R's for my Dakota. So far so good. Had a few chances to use them in the rain and so far they seem to be a pretty good tire. I haven't had any traction problems, as of yet, but most of my driving was around town. What part of CT are you from? I'm from Bristol.

Thanks for the input Jamie. I'd appreciate you letting me know again in a few weeks. I don't plan on picking up new set of tires until the fall.

I found a website, www.1010tires.com, that gives ratings. The wet traction rating for the MT/R's is the same as the BF Goodrich All Terrains. Not sure if these ratings are dependable or not.

I drive 45 minutes to work, so mudders might not be the smartest move, but they sure will look nice.

Oh by the way, I'm in Danbury. Not as sweet as the home of ESPN like Bristol.

my experience with the muds is that they suck in wet road conditions . They turn to slicks in wet weather , real squirrely . I don't know about the all terrains , but I can't wait and replace my tires and go for the all terrains . The noise of the muds is too much for me , getting old I guess . I have a 01 quad 3" fabtech 2wd 31x10.5 bfg muds

The pro-comp mud terrains come with factory siping in them. They do good in the wet weather. Besides, they do "buy 3 get one free" tires sales several times during the year.

My baja claws do awesome in the rain. How well a mud tire does in the rain is all a matter of whether or not or how well the tire is siped. That's why some people sipe tsl's because they suck in the rain. A few cuts with a circular saw and they do great. By the way I'm out Portland way, outside middletown.

How deep can that pond possibly be?

Dan,
Thanks for the input about the Pro Comp Mud Terrains. I failed to see them on all the tire sites I was searching. They look sweet. All of the reviews that I have found have great things to say about them. Sounds like I'll be buying the Pro Comp Mud Terrains.

I appreciate the input. If anyone has these tires, please let me know what you think. I'll be getting the 305/70 R16's. They shouldn't rub to much with a 3" lift, hopefully.

Yes, Bristol the home of ESPN! I work literally right around the corner from ESPN. Great place to work at from what I hear.

Anyway, got to test the MT/R's out in the storms that we had yesterday. I'll tell you what, these tires grip a lot better in the rain then the RT/S's that were on there from the factory. I don't know though if it's the fact that my truck is a V6 with an LSD out back or just that much better of a tire then the RT/S. Either way, no complaints yet. Noise factor is definintely louder, but not annoying.

In regards to the Pro Comps, I've heard nothing but good things about their tires. My buddy has a set of Pro Comp X-Terrains on his lifted F-150. Definitely a nice tire.

Cool to see some others from CT on here, as well.

I have a set of 33x12.5 Goodyear MT/R's. I think they look way better than the Pro Comps or BFG's. I have had them for about three months now and have had no problems whatsoever. I even took the Dak on a trip from Albuquerque, NM to Little Rock, AR and it drove great through heavy rain. They definately make more noise than an all-terrain but they perform much better as well. Just my opinion.

Ordered the MTR's last night. 305/70 R16. I was on the fence between the Pro Comp's and the MTR's, but the MTR's just look so awesome. Can't wait to get them on the truck.

I keep hearing that people need to trim a little with 33". Any recommendations on the easiest way to do this?

Hey congrats on your purchase on the MT/R's. They have turned out to be a great tire for me so far.

In regards to the front bumper, try mounting the tires first and see how much clearance you have up front. You might be able to just take the front bumper cover off and drill out the mounting brackets on the cover and push it forward to gain some more clearance without having to cut away at the bumper. Use some washers in there for a little extra support after you drill out the holes.

Thanks for the advice Venom. I just wish the tires would show up. I ordered them a month ago from discounttiredirect.com. They just told me yesterday that it will be another 6-8 weeks. Sucks, but they gave them to me for $181 a tire, free shipping. Not a bad price for 305/70/R16's.

I've read a couple times about people having their tires "siped".

Forgive me, but what exactly are they taking about? I saw something about using a circular saw, so I would guess that you're actually cutting channels around the circumference of the tires. Is that accurate?

I'm looking at getting the BFG MT's, and I'm thinking about the wet traction issue.

I'm leaning toward the MT's because I'm in Upstate NY, and I tend to get myself into pretty interesting areas during the winter -- trying pull out snowmobiles and trailers and such...

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.
