Subject: 3.9 to 5.2 engine swap questions
IP: Logged

Message:
Im going to do an engine swap on my 1997 dodge dakota, 4x4, 5spd transmission, and a 3.9L engine. I want to do a engine swap to a 5.2L. I have been told the 5.2 engine will fit my 3.9 tranny. Will my 3.9 bellhousing fit on the 5.2 or do i need the 5.2 bellhousing. Will the 5.2 engine will fit into my 3.9 engine mounts. And will the 5.2 pcm fit the connections in the cab.And do i need the wiring harness or can i just tap into the fuel injectors and how would i go about doing that. Any other helpfull tips and tricks would be appreciated.

I don't know about the 5-speeds but I can almost guarantee if your truck was an auto it wouldn't fit. I got a 98 and if I can talk my uncle into selling his 98 to me for parts, I'm gonna do an engine swap too.

How deep can that pond possibly be?

A 3.9 is a 5.2 minus 2 middle cylinders. Same bore & stroke. Same timing chain, cover, water pump and accessory brackets on the front. Same transmission bolt pattern on the rear. There are some differences between a 2wd and a 4x4 trans bolt pattern as the right side motor mount also attaches to the trans on a 4x4 so there is an extra tab on the trans. A 2wd has a different motor mount configuration and doesn’t. However, IIRC, a 3.9 5-speed would be a NV3500 which is not know for it’s strength. You may want to look at upgrading that as well if you are planning on building the motor up any.
