I am considering getting a 3" body or suspension lift for my 01 dakota but can't decide which one to get. Is it really worth it to pay more for the suspension.

I think I speak for all of the bodylifted people out there when I say that if you have the option (meaning the money) to buy a suspension lift, go for it! Nothing wrong with the body lift, but there's no pride in saying "I've got a bodylifted truck." I just went with it because it's cheap lift. If I were in your shoes- I would save some more money and throw on both.

How deep can that pond possibly be?

If you just want something for looks, go with the body lift, it's cheap, works and looks good. If you want something more rugged and off-road capable, go with the suspension lift.. or both.

I'm in the process of saving for a suspension lift for my 95 CC 4x4.

Also keep in mind that with a suspension lift, you'll want new tires and rims, that's a LARGE potential cost you may not have been thinking about. Lets not forget you'll probably want new bumpers and maybe a winch and skid plates too.

I'm looking at close to 3k for suspension lift, front & rear bumpers.
