I've seen through some of the posts, some of you work for tire stores putting tires on. I have a questin for you, what would be the maximum balancing weight per tire that you should allow for a 31" tire be? I'll explain more if someone knows an answer for me!

I don't know what a max amount of weight would be, but if the machine is showing an excessive requirement for weights in one spot, the 1st thing a good tire guy would do is to rotate the tire on the rim and try it again. Just as tires are not evenly weighted, neither are wheels. By "slipping" the tire on the rim, some of that excess weight may be able to be transferred to the other side, reducing the amount of weights needed.

Trueing tires (shaving down high spots. Not all shops have this capability) is sometimes required also. Not all tires are manufactured perfectly round.

Lastly, the larger the tire, the bigger the possibilty it is not evenly weighted and the harder it can be to balance.

I know this doesn't specifically answer your question, but maybe the extra information will help you make a decision. You will find some shops stating a max amount of weights and others saying, "as long as it balances, it doen't matter". I'm with you, there has to be a realistic limit......then you get another tire.

Thanks other Bill, the reason why i asked the question was, I had a set of 31" goodyear MTR's put on 38,000kms ago and fought like hell the whole time with the company that put them on about shaking steering wheel and bouncing down the road. they told me that happens with a bigger tire.....Yah! 31" tires to me aren't big if they fit the vehicle with no mods. So now i'm running 33" tires(procomp xterrains) and they ride smooth and balanced with minimal weight 2.50oz max, the tire shop that put them on took over 8oz's of weight off every rim with the MTR's and said they should never let tires go that have that much weight....38,000kms street driving isn't that much for $1250.00can so I contacted goodyear to back the tire and shops they put them in...i'll keep posting updates.

31" tires are not big at all for the Daks. You get them with the tire and handling package. If you ask a decent 4x4 shop, they don't have problems balancing until they get to 35" or so, and they still get them balanced.
