Subject: bodylift for 98 ext. cab
IP: Logged

Message:
I just purchased my Dakota a few months ago and want to put a body lift on it. I want to try and save money by machining my own blocks. This is the first time dealing with a body lift and was wondering what the block's dimensions are. Are they all the same size or are they different? New at this stuff so bear with me here. Thanks alot.

Oh, I almost forgot. By machining my own blocks, I mean cooking dounuts in my oven for 6 hours at 450F, and using those. Thanks again

sorry nobody has responded. i personally think it's NOT worth it. just buy a PA body lift for 200 bucks and call it good. it has EVERYTHING you need, that's just my opinion

Dont know if you read my posting asking for steering shaft info but I just made my own 3.5" lift for about $45.
Everyone uses the PA kit and I have been asking for the last couple of weeks for someone to give me a little info on the steering shaft extension. A picture would have been great and maybe the install instructions from the kit.
Not one reply. I think this board is just for people with lots of money that like to brag about their cool trucks, not much help for us little guys with limited dollars. :(
Read my post and let me know if I can be of any help.

That's cool that you made your own... What material were the blocks made of?

Blocks were UHMW plastic, or is it UMHW. Very common plastic for fabing stuff. Turns nice in the lathe and it came in 3.5" round stock so we just had to chop 3.5" pieces off, face them in the lathe and bore a 1/2 hole down the center.
A buddy was just here and he cuts pieces of pipe to the right lenght for spacers,I would weld a big washer on both ends to keep the bolts centered.
I think I'm going to seperate the flex joint in the steering shaft, machine up and install a 1" spacer, then bolt it back togeather with grade 8 bolts.
Looks like the simplest way to go.

that sounds simple enough... where did you get the plastic at? I'm just an 18 year old machinist STUDENT so i don't know where we get our supplies from.

Try asking your instructor, they should know who supplies what in your area. We have a local plastic shop and thats all they sell.

I own a 98 dakota ext. cab and I put a body lift on it about 4 yrs. ago.
I am not sure of the make but the lift that I bought was only about 30 dollars and it came with everything.
Keep in mind that when you lift you truck if you buy one or make a lift you have to extend the steering link and the four wheel drive shifter.
Also you have to raise the fan shroud and the bumpers.
Hope this helps, if I can find the paperwork on the kit I used I will post the make of it.

I didn't know that you had to extend all of that stuff. Do you think i could get away with a 2" lift without extending the shifter? Thanks for all the info trip.

I seriosly doubt you will be able to raise the body at all without extending those parts.
Its really not that big a a deal, I am no mechanic by any means, but I do know a little bit and I completed it in about 8 hrs and a 30 pack or so. The kit that I used(and I am still trying to find the paperwork on it) came with everything you should need with the exception of tools. I dont think you even needed to weld anything, even the extenders where bolt on. I was kindof scared getting into that type of job when I didnt know that much about it but once it was finished it was pretty simple. Also another thing to think about, when I raised my truck I put an inch bigger tires and an inch bigger wheels on it to go with the lift. In doing that I truly got 4" lift instead of just 3, but the wheels and tire is what will cost you the money.

Steering shaft was easier than I thought. A Jeep Cherokee shaft is the same as the Dak shaft only longer. Just swapped in the Jeep shaft and I'm done.
See a Pic on my web page.

hey Trip, you didn't get 4" of lift. Your frame stayed at the same height the whole time. Actually you only got 1/2" of lift. A tire that's 1" bigger in DIAMETER will only raise it 1/2" as the radius is only 1/2" bigger.

i just got my pa body lift in and im going to install it this weekend i cant wait but the only thing i noticed while reading the directions is that the pa body lift wants you to cut the 4x4 shifter in half and weld a 3 inch piece in between i thought that was stupid so i made an extention that will just screw right on lucky for me i work in a machine shop but you would think that the lift would come with one that would screw right on it was realy easy to make took about 45 min if any body wants to see it or wants the dimentions just let me know
