Subject: solid axle?
IP: Logged

Message:
I just bought a used 01QCD with a 4.7. Very dissapointed so far. I was wondering if anyone has some of these problems. When accelerating from a dead stop and letting off the throttle at 25-30 mph something in the driveline clunks, like the backlash is drawn at the same time. Dealer said its normal? Second, I've had a clunking in the front end. Took it in today and saw for myself that everything is tight including ball joints, however the front axle halves where they go into the housing have enough play in them that when you wiggle them you can see and hear the slop. What kind of tolerance is considered normal? Thirdly, if I can't figure it out, I might put a leaf sprung solid axle conversion on. Any ideas on what axle will fit the truck width and align with the transfer case?

It seems the axles from late 70s Ford Pickups..like a 78 or 79 F250 have the closest width. The High Pinion or reverse cut axles align with the T-case.

Thats what ive picked up from the insane amount of threads on this topic. I would love to do a swap such as this, but i dont know enough about it, and dont know anyone who does right now.

You need the axles out of a 78 or 79 ford F150/F250 ... you need to put at least a dana 44 axle in the front, a high pinion dana 44 for the front would be best (less drive shaft angle), and you can either run a dana 60 or a Ford 9inch as the rear axle.. both will fit like they were made for the dakota, or you can even use the axles out of an old jeep waggoneer, not sure which year though, just make sure that if you dont know what you are doing when it comes to the suspension.. pay someone else to do it.. you'll thank your self later

Yup what he said...except stay away from the F-150 housings as most of them have cast radius arm mounts, and they are a pain in the rear to do anything with. I started out with one of these and it turned out okay...getting ready to use an F-250 housing and Fox Air Shocks. I know a pretty good portion about this subject so if you need some help email me at soliddakota@hotmail.com and I will gladly help you. If you are anywhere near Central Kentucky we can do the install for you if you are wanting someone to do it.

Yea im getting ready to do mine as well.. i have both axles.. i wanted dana 60s front and rear, the front axle is complete with the entire steering and the axles already have detroit lockers and warn hubs...the lockers just need to be freshened up a bit, and im using a leaf spring set up and its gonna sit on 38inch swamper TSL/SX's , with a set of 38.5inch swamper STS's for street tires.. and custom made drive shafts...

Thanks for all the input, but I've decided to get rid of my lemon. There are so many problems with it, I'd have to rebuild practically the whole truck to be happy with it. This is definitely the worst truck I've owned and I've owned Fords and Chevy's both. From what I've read from all the other posts on this websight, I'm not alone. Good luck with the swaps.
