Subject: 3" body now a new shake
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 99' Dakota with a 3" body lift and 33's. I had it aligned two weeks before i put the tires and lift on. It was not out of alignment. When i drive, about 80% of the time the truck will shake, but i don't feel it in the steering wheel. I had a set of mud tires put on. Thinking i got a bad set, i went back and put on the Dunlop RV. This still didn't solve the problem. I noticed with my 31's on, the drivers side tire slighty rubbed the frame. I told the dealership about it and they said , since they were not the factory tires that is why they rub.
I had 40,000 miles on them when i took it in.I don't know where to go next. And the tires have been balanced twice. A LITTLE HELP PLEASE.

Q: Did you change wheels also?

Some things to try:

1. Swap one of the front tires/wheels to the back, keeping them on the same sides of the vehicle. Drive it and see if you then feel it in the steering.
2. If nothing, try the same with the other side. This is to determine if it is being caused by a tire or wheel.
You could have:
1. A bent or out of round wheel(especially if they were bought used)
2. An out-of-round tire(this is not as uncommon as some might think....especially with larger tires) in which case you would need to find a tire shop that has "trueing" capabilities. That is where they spin the tire while it is mounted on the vehicle and shave off rubber from the tread to make it "round". I had to have it done on a set years ago.

If it doesn't show up doing this, then I would start looking into each step performed during the lift install to see if something was not tightened, or if something was loosened that shouldn't have been loosened, and then not tightened.

I have had a total of 3 new sets on the truck, within one week of the new lift, from the same shop that sold them to me. Two were from the same brand and the last one is the Dunlop brand. I checked it one, twice and a thired time making sure i put it together right.

I had a similar problem mine was the bearings in my front drivers hub. It would walk all over the road and shake bad. Jack the tire off the ground and see if it moves up and down(put one hand on bottom back side of tire and one on the top outside and jerk it back and forth no pun intended). If it does it could be the bearings out in you hub. On my 97 you can't buy the bearings, they come in the hub and you have to buy the whole hub. and i have a friend when he got his lift and tires the tire shop put the tires on but didnt balance them correctly and same problem. had someone else rebalance them and it was fixed.
