Subject: Tire & Rim choice for lifted 01 Quadcab
IP: Logged

Message:
I will soon be installing a PA 3" body lift in addition to the 3" Rancho suspension lift. I am looking to achieve the most aggressive stance possible without having to trim anything or put up with any rubbing. I would like the tires/rims to stick out as much as possible so I can show off as much rubber as I can and I want to switch from the stock 16" rim to an aftermarket 15" rim. My question is this...

What is the largest tire/rim combination that I could use, with as little backspacing as possible, after installing the 3" body lift and the 3" suspension lift?

Thanks in advance,

Kevin

You have two main questions to ask yourself, #1 are you going to use it or do you just want it to look good? #2 Do you mind cutting some fender?

With the combination of lift you could fit 35x12.50x15 tires on a 15x8 Eagle Alloy wheel with a 3.25 back spaceing if you don't mind cutting about 1" of fender. IF you do it right it looks good.
I have those tires on the stock 15x8 wheels of my 98 Durango. If you want pics e-mail me at mudtoy98@aol.com.
If you don't like that idea I would stick to a 33x12.50x15.

Thanks for the quick response. I'll probably go with the 33x12.50x15 setup. That's a nice wide tire that should give me the look I'm after. My ride doesn't spend much time offroad, so I'm looking for more show than go. But...

I've heard conflicting opinions about whether serious off-road enthusiasts should use the body lifts or not. I don't really like the idea of lifting the body off of the frame, so if I opted for the Rancho 3" lift, would I still be able to use the 33x12.50x15 setup with 3.25" of backspacing without having to cut fenders or put up with rubbing anywhere?

I'm really trying to get the best look for the buck without compromising the ride quality. I've read that the Rancho lift kits still offer a nice ride, and I really like the idea of modified suspensions (I have a racing quad with all the bells whistles and buzzers), so if given a choice, I'd pick a suspension lift over a body lift any day. But can I still fit 33x12.50x15 tires on it with 3.25" of backspacing?

Thanks again in advance,

Kevin

It will be close what you might have to do is go with the American Racing Baja wheels that have a little more backspacing, I think that it is a 4.5 backspaceing. What I would do is find a tire and wheel shop that might be able to give you some more help. If you really want to go with the wheels with the 3.25 backspaceing you might have to go with a 32x11.50 tire. But before you order anything ask a local shop.

Thanks guys. I'll ask the guys at the local shops who do all the lift kits in town. If I install the Rancho lift kit, I will be the first one in town to do it, so there probably won't be anyone with any experience with Dakota's. They usually bend over backwards for their customers, and I believe they have one of those new tools used for checking possible tire size and backspacing without having to actually mount a tire and rim. Thanks again for the help fellas. I'll be ordering my lift kit soon.
