Subject: Body lift and Suspension lift
IP: Logged

Message:
What's the difference between the two? Pros and cons?

I will only use my 2002 Dakota Quad Cab for driving on the road and highway. I'm not looking to drive off-road but...

I'm just a sucker for 4X4 trucks.

Maybe a body lift is for me?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Body Lift does just that: it lifts the body up from the frame and suspension using Blocks. Pro's: cheap, available. Con's: does not enhance suspension travel, may have to have custom work done for bolt on accessories (ie grill guard, side steps).

Suspension Lift changes the actual suspension. If you have a 2WD then Fabtech makes a 3 inch Suspension lift. Also, AIM industries has one. They both consist of a longer coil and new upper control arm for the front, and add-a-leaf to the rear. If you have a 4WD then there aren't any available from a reputable company yet. Pro's: better handling for offroad, better looking. Con's: more expensive, availability, need new wheels for backspacing issues.

You can combine the two for a larger lift, but no manufacturer will acknowledge/recommend it.

Tim, I have the same dakota as you (mine is 2wd) and I installed a body lift first then the suspension lift. I must say that I was happier with the ride BEFORE the 3" suspension lift. Ironicly, I think (for the newer 2wd's) that the body lift is better for the daily driver than the susp.lift is. Without getting into a debate, I like the stock suspension (quiter and smoother) and since you said your not looking to drive off-road...

I can make this REALLY easy for you! Get the much cheaper body lift (Perf.Accessories)! With that, you can fit 31's and look like the stock 4x4's while changing nothing to the suspension (a good thing). This is of-course my opinion, but thats what this is for, right! If you want to run a larger tire like 33's, then you have to add the suspension lift as well. Hope this helps!

TallQuad,

Thanks! I love raised Dakota and it was one of the primary reasons why I am considering a body lift.

I haven't figured out what suspension lift is really for... maybe off-road perhaps? If it is, then the body lift would be ideal for me, since I'm not planning to go off-road.

So can you tell me what the Performance Accessories are made of? Steel? I hear it's made of "nylon" and that kinda scared me. Also, are there any modifications required for the body lift? e.g. rack and pinion steering, etc.

Thanks for the info! I'm really thinking about lifting my 2002 Dakota several months.

The lift is plenty strong! The blocks are made of nylon or something close to that but don't worry about that, it works great. The lift won't effect any of the suspension parts like r&p. It's an easy and straight-foward kit to install. Do some searching on this site for more info, you'll find ALL you need to know!

Tim a Suspension lift raises your frame off the ground instead of just the body. Also it gives you more articulation to your wheels.

Thanks to everyone about the body lift. It sounds like I'll be going with the body lift... but even if that's the option for me, I'm not even sure I want to modify my new truck this early.

Perhaps later when I get the urge to lift my Dakota, then I'll kick myself for not doing it earlier once I get it raised. :)

Thanks!

I have a question... Which one makes it taller, so to speak. My friend told me that a 3" body lift actually only looks about 1" after putting it in. Is this true, or did that make no sense? lol.

The filler tube for my gas tank was the only thing that needed to be "stretched" in which all I did was move it a little further down the neck and have had no problems with it at all. The only problem I had with the lift was getting my steering extension in and all i had to do was grind it down a little. I've had it for 2 years now and have not had a single problem. If you're looking for a cheaper way to lift it then I would suggest the B.L.

Why is everyone trying to give body lifts a bad name? They are not the demons they used to be. Technology has come a long way since body lifts were invented. I don't have a body lift on my Dak because I personally don't like the way they look on Daks and I don't need one to fit the tires i want on my truck. But I do have a body lift on my 79 Bronco and have several friends that also have body lifts (04 Chevy Colorado, 69 Ford Bronco, 90 Yota Taco, 85 GMC K5 Jimmy, 79 Ford F150, 92 Jeep YJ Wrangler, and last but not least 91 Jeep YJ Wrangler). Not one of these trucks, even after the hell we put them through, has had a problem with the body lifts.

Cheap easy way to lift the truck...I recommend getting gap guards is you go with the B.L. because personnaly I think it looks retarted to see the space between the frame and the bed...I haven't done anything about it yet but soon will.

I agree with Adam, all i had to do was stretch the filler neck,or should i say pull it out further and my three inch body lift worked great, even though it appeared to be made of octagon shaped plastic blocks i have had no problems at all.As for gap gaurds yeah i agree again and filled my gaps with diamond plate, because thats what i had available,it fills the whole and looks fine.

Anyone have do the 3" BL and the 2" Torsion crank & 3" blocks in rear? If so, what shocks/part #'s did you install after? I did this lift to my 2003 and looking to replace shocks, but none are listed for that year. Would any 3-4" lift shock for 1997-2004 work?
