Subject: 2wd rear end swap with 4wd
IP: Logged

Message:
It is my understanding that the 4wd dakotas have either limited slip or pos- traction rear ends. I have a 2wd dakota that will break traction in a pot hole. Can I take the entire back axle off of a wrecked dakota 4wd and put it under my 2wd. Is the rear end of a 4wd worth the trouble? I really dont have the $ to buy lockers for my truck. My truck is a 97, 3.9L and I believe it has a 3.55 rear end. Please help me with any info.

Not all 4wd's have an lsd in the rear. Check out the differential, pull the cover if you have to. Also check out 2wds because many of them have lsd's. If you can find an R/T it will have an lsd and 3.92 gears!

Not a bad theory, but If the Gen III's are laid out like the Gen II's.. You'd end up lifting the rear of the truck quite a bit changign rear ends like that. On the Gen II's at least, 2WD's have the springs under the axle--- while the 4WD's.. you guessed it.. have the springs over the axle. You'd end up lifting the truck around 4 inches or so.
If you want to retain your height.. just add a LSD unit to you existing rear, or as sugested .. find one from an R/T
