I was told that the Dakota shares the same frame and suspension as the Jeep Cherokee, is this true?

nope. cherokee's have coil spring suspension, with solid axles front and rear. dakotas have leaf springs with a solid axle in the rear and torsion bar independent suspension up front.

The only thing the two have incommon are some Cherokee's ran the 8.25 rear axle but only a few have this, and they both have leaf springs in the rear.

Other than that, Jeep Cherokees are on Unibody frames, and dakotas on conventional body-on-frames. They have different front axles and steering, they have different transfer cases, and different engines and transmissions.

Actually, I thought they share the same engines as daks. Late '90s you could get the 5.2 and 5.9 block and I'm sure it would've come with all the same equipment except for intake system and exhuast. Now you get the 4.7. Aren't they using the exact same engines in Jeeps as dodges?

the standard cherokee has always come with either the 4.0l I6 or a 4 cylinder. the grand cherokee in the past had the option of of the 3.9L V-6, 5.2L or 5.9L V8. the new one come with the 4.7L, 4.7Lho, or the 5.9L V-8.

the standard cherokee has always be a unibody.

The Jeep Cherokee (XJ) that was produced from 1984 until 2002 was a unibody. It shared it's platform with the Commanche (MJ).

The Jeep Cherokee (SJ) was produced from 1962 until 1983. It was a body on frame. Before anyone jumps in to correct me, the Grand Wagoneer (SJ) was produced from 1962 until 1991.

So when asking questions regarding Jeep Cherokee's, one must be certain to state whether the question is regarding SJ or XJ Cherokee's.

REAL Jeepers know better.
