a straight axle putting a soilid axle under them. for example your dak has an independent front supention. each wheel ( in the front) can move up and down with out effecting the other one. a solid axle is like what is on new super duty fords has. the advantage. one it is much stronger than ifs, which you now know since yours just blow up. two it is much easier to lift and run bigger tires. hope this helps. oh one down side is that it's isn't cheap tp switch from ifs to a solid axle.

it's best to swap both that way you can have the same bolt patteren front and back. that way you don't need differnt rims for front and back, also than they axles are the same with.

a straight axle is what dodge used to have on their full size trucks until 2002 now they have whats called ifs or independent front suspension. dakotas have always had ifs i believe so you wouldn't be able to swap in a straight axle from an old dakota. your best bet would be getting a straight axle from a pre 02 ram or a dana 44 whick i believe is what the ram used anyway. if u want to get a reqally sturdy platform get a dana 60 front axle very beefy. but a dana 44 would suit your needs perfeclty . the advantage of a sloid axle is durability u can get many different gear sets and posi or limited slip diifs for them and also their much easier to lift they handle bigger tires better and u get more articulation out of them allowing for better off roading. oh and dakotas are notorious for their problems with their ifs their upper ball joints are always going out causing severe front end troubles. so u would also be getting rid of that prob too.
