First off, it's a heavy truck with a V6. It's never going to be fast or quick.

If you just want it loud, replace the muffler with a straight pipe. It's pretty cheap.

Take your 600bucks and go buy a nitrous kit. Forget the muffler. They make a real cheap one that has a single injector that goes in the air-hat.

In a word, "yes". Replacement mufflers and cat back systems never seem to make enough additional power to be noticable, much less worth the cost. Some will even cost you power. If you're willing to use headers and true dual exhaust, there's some good power to be had. But be sure and check with the emissions folks before doing that.

A better intake and throttle body may give you some power, but that gets expensive. Talk to the experts - like Hughes and Fastman - about exactly how much power and where. If you pick up 10hp at 5500 rpm's, that may not be very usefull. Then decide how much power per $$ you're getting.

Hypertech doesn't make one, but you might find a company that can upgrade your computer. There's good power hiding in there.

And don't forget about your differential gears. I think stock was 3.55???? Consider 3.92's or 4.10's. That's just about the best bang for the buck there is.

The V6 is a much maligned engine. It will never be a racer. But then, the Dakota doesn't make a very good racer anyway. But the 3.9 can be made to run well with basic hot rod techniques. I used to have a '91 2x4 Club Cab with a stock V6, 5 speed, and 3.92 gears. I used it to tow my '69 Mustang on a U-Haul dolly from VA to upstate NY, through the PA mtns. Didn't have any problems. I put a lot of miles on that truck. It ran great and got good mileage. But I never considered it to be a performance car. It was a very comfortable and capable truck.
