Subject: removing leaf spring keepers

Message:
I was told by a drag racer that if I removed the rear leaf spring keepers and doubled up on the front ones, that the rear wheels would grip & hook up faster. The theory being that when you hit the gas from a stop, it allows the rear leaf springs to spread, allowing the body to rise and pushing the rear axle housing down. He claims its good for .5 seconds or better in a 1/4 mile run. Anyone ever heard of this or done it?

Thats an old school mopar trick. It works good on the older cars, but not sure if it will aplay well to the dakota.

Yep, right outta the playbook, but 1/2 second? That all depends on how bad it launched before the mod.

The old mopars had the rear axle placed forward of center 3". The leaves also overlaped each other more in the front than the rear. This was Chryslers quick fix for wheel hop. Because the trucks have the rear axle in the middle of the leaf assembly, it will not work as good as it did in the RWD cars of 1988 and older. But, it might help some.

Good information offcenter
As far and removing the rear keepers just video tape yourself launching with and without keepers. if the distance between the top of the wheel and lip increases leave the keepers off.
the purpose of this is to make the axle push the rear end of the truck up... the higher it pushes the harder it will plant the tires...

Thanks for the info. Carmen has the scientific way of testing the theory - but that's some work. It's a cheap mod. so I don't mind taking a gamble on it. Is there any downside? I haul somewhat heavy loads at times. Any possiblity of damaging anything when loaded without rear keepers? If not, I'll give it a try.
