I am going to buy a dakota soon and i want to know whether I should get a V-6 or a V-8. I am guessing either a '99 or '00, and it will be extended cab 2wd. I want to be able to drive anywhere that I need to and be comfortable doing it, but I don't know whether the V-6 has enough power or not. Or if there would be a major difference in gas milage or not. Any suggestions that I could get would help. thanks

This has been discussed ad nauseum, but here goes again. Get the V8. The v6 only gets slightly better fuel mileage. But performance is much worse, and you really have to flog it. Not worth it, IMO.

If you have or will have a hunger for power and can afford the insurance get the V8.

Insurance on the v8 is not much more, as long as the truck does not say R/T on it!!!!! if it is an R/T is is a sport truck, but a regular dak is just that....A pickup truck. No more expensive than any farm truck in the U.S. If you do a lot of hard city driving you will get BETTER mileage with the v8, because you dont need to floor it to get power out of it, and WOT all the time is hard on gas!!!

The Club Cab weighs slightly more, so you would benefit from the v-8. You're way ahead at resale time with the v-8.

Dustin,
I SWEAR on a stack of bibles on the statement I'm about to make. The 4.7LV8 gets better gas mileage than the 3.9L V6. I am not bullsh!ting you. I had a 2001SLT RC V6. The best it ever got was 19mpg and that was driving non-stop at 55mph for 250 straight miles. I hated that truck with a passion. I traded my 98 R/T CC for that piece of SH!T! My insurance went up on top of that. I traded that 2001 3.9L V6 RC for a 2002 4.7L V8 RC. My average round trip gas mileage on the 4.7L is between 16-17mpg. My average round trip on the 3.9L was between 15.5 and 16.5. The 4.7L did get worse gas mileage in the city, but only by 1 mpg!
On the interstate driving 80mph my 4.7L auto averages 18mpg. My 3.9L auto would only get 15 mpg. At 70mph my 4.7L would hit 19.5 mpg. The 3.9L never got better than 17mpg. Driving the back roads at 45-60mph I have gotten 21mpg on my 4.7L several times. I never got better than 19mpg on my 3.9L and I only did that once in the 14 months and 33,000 miles I owned it. My 98 R/T got the same gas mileage on the interstate that my 2001 3.9L got. For the LOVE OF GOD, GET THE 4.7L V8! You will not regret it. There are other reasons for choosing the 4.7 over the 3.9. I could go on all day comparing the 2 and there is only one reason that is in favor for the 3.9. That is price. It's about $800.00 cheaper.
