I recently tore the truck down to replace the pilot bearing on the back of the crankshaft. I took the tranny off, disassembled the clutch and cleaned the components with brake parts cleaner, and replaced the pilot bearing. Everything was operating flawlessly for about a week, but now the truck makes a slight whistling/whining noise when the clutch is pushed all the way in.

The noise is very slight. It happens during the last 1/2" of pedal travel. If I release the clutch pedal 1/2" off the floor, it stops. When I get the noise, you can "feel" the noise through the shifter handle. As I said before, the noise is very slight, so it's nothing I'm too concerned about (yet), but it's annoying.

When I disassembled the components, all items were marked and reinstalled in the exact same position. I installed a new T.O. bearing as well, but ellected not to get a new clutch because the Centerforce Dual Friction that's on there has less than 30K mi. on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I did all the work myself (the second time I've had the tranny out), so I'm confident that everything was reinstalled correctly.

Thanks!

I know there was a post a while back with some regards to just this... Are you sure that your new pilot bearing had the seal on it or rather had the seal turned facing back toward the clutch and tranny, because some kits don't give you the right pilot bearing for these applications... Are you sure that you turned it right when you put it back in??? May also be that after you cleaned everything you didn't regrease the input shaft to the tranny and your throwout bearing isn't working properly or same if didn't lube up the pilot bearing... Sounds almost like you've got a little bearing whining going on there which can result in tearing up everything else and wearing out shafts... If you really feal it in the shifter as well could very will be the bearings or could be that your tranny isn't tight with the engine anymore... Might want to check those bolts first... Can you still shift your gears allright or about the same as before the swapout??? BUT, it really does sound like you've got a sticking bearing or something of that nature :// Sorry I couldn't be of more help to you...

Thanks for the info, Greg! I'll check into all of that first...before I go ripping out the tranny again.

Kory, sounds to me like Greg's got it. One of the two bearings (pilot/throwout)are having a problem. Ungreased, flat roller, stuck, misaligned, something. Let us know if/when you figure it out. I wouldn't put too many more miles on before I figured it out either. A self destructing bearing tends to take other components with it!

Thanks to you, too, Tnjones. The sound is wierd...I've been monitoring the sound for the past few days. I only get the sound after the truck has warmed-up, but not after I start it first thing in the morning or when the truck has been sitting for a few hours. I'm thinking along the same lines as both of you. Will probably take the tranny out again within the next few weeks to check and see which parts are showing wear. With only 300 miles on the new parts, I'm bound to notice something irregular when I crack it back open.
Thanks again!
