Subject: question about the 727 tranny

hi all-
im kinda new to the whole dodge thing, im a chevy guy (i know). anyways, i was wondering if i could not install/connect the kickdown linkage and not harm the 727 tranny. i know in a th350 chevy its ok not to. ive got a gen 1 dak that has a small block swap, 727 w/ shift kit backing it, 2400-2800 converter. will be using it primarily as a street/strip machine. ratcheting the shifter back a notch to pass doesnt bother me at all, just need to make sure that mama mopar's trans is cool with that. thanks a ton in advance!

It is not cool to do this. Your tranny will fry. Only in full-manual race valve bodies can the kickdown be deleted. For street/strip trannies, you have to have that kickdown.

thanks for the reply- are there any tricks arround this? like a way to make the tranny think it never needs to kick down (meaning no burned tranny) without doing the race valvebody conversion? id kinda like to keep the full auto feature for driving in traffic (manual steering on my dak). and if i cant 'trick' it, how has anyone set up their linkage in their daks? from what i have seen it is all rod linkage, meaning no cables, for the kick down. thanks again in advance :)

I have run the trans on my street strip car for 22 years without a kick down with now problem My friend at tranny shop just tied back the linkage about halfway I manual shift car only runs low 13s but I had 2500 passses on it before motor was pulled for rebuild I street drove the car a couple thousand miles a year to and from the tracks and for cruise in and car shows. it is a 727 behind a 383 dodge in a 3900# car.

Their milder kits clearly state that they require the kickdown linkage. I can see where fixing the rod half way back would work. You get too much pressure at low speed, not enough at high. Granted, if you have the pressure turned up you can cover the high end, but you'll have even higher excess pressure over the low end, but the only real issue there is the heat generated from the pressure. You'd need a good tranny cooler. Obviously that sort of rig will work, but you lose some flexibility in the driving manners of the tranny. I personally ran a B&M manual/auto in a '69 Charger, but always had the kickdown hooked up. Thanks to the kickdown, it shifted smoothly and not too harshly at part throttle, but would snap your neck at full throttle/redline.
The gen 1's still had the rod-linkage. The Magnums used the cable setup. The rod linkage is adjusted by turning a couple of the segments that have threads. It is possible to convert to the newer cable-type kickdown, but the rods worked well too (in production for roughly 30 years before the cable).

There's an adjustable swivel also. The threaded rod is near the carb. The swivel is in the linkage where it fits into the transmission. Loosen it and slide the rod back or forward, but I'd spin the rod at the carb first. Just remember, the more kickdown you use, the more you delay upshifts (so it winds higher), and the harder it'll shift (within the capabilities of the setup). Don't just go full-tilt andmax everything out. Adjust it in increments until you get it where you want it.

318 Magnum Forged Pistons
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello all
Anybody know who makes a 318 magnum forged blower street piston? There going into a V6 but they should fit from everything I've read. I know I can get them made, but need to know if someone would have them in stock. How about experience with different companies. I will NOT use TRW, I've had a motor lock mup because the crown of the piston expanded, not fun. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Jim
