hi all-
i got a 88 2wd short bed dak that i have swapped the 4 banger for a small block. i have mattted it to the orig 5 speed, which is now getting chucked out in the quest for more consistent times at the track. i guess id rather beat on the dak rather than the camaro. anyways, its a fairly mild built LA318 with about 300hp at the crank, tranny goin in this week is a 727 with a 2400 stall converter. it has the orig rear in it now with what i guess is 3.55 gears (anyone know for sure?). my question is i know that rear has got to be weak- its so little haha but at least it does 2-wheel-peels :). i figured its the 7 1/4. im using welds, 4" wide fronts 8" in the back, with MT et streets as my gumballs. any idea about the durability of this puny rear or a rear that wont grenade that will bolt directly in? or am i gonna have to break out the welder... i hope not, so please guys help me out! thanks

I give you 6 runs or less on that rear before you break it. Get an 8 3/4. An e-body rear will bolt right in ('cuda, challenger). Here's a write up I did on my site:

http://www.bionicdodge.com/8_3_4_gen_ii_dakota.htm

That was for 91-96 Dakotas but it will also apply to your truck. Since you've already got a 5 on 4.5 setup in the front you don't even have to worry about the front end bolt pattern.
